Contemporary full mottled calf, smooth back divided into six panels , morocco author label to second panel, remaining panels with central flower device and smaller flower corner pieces, covers with triple fillet border, gilt roll to edges and inner edges, all edges gilt, french curl marbled endpapers. Slightly rubbed to extremities, especially outer joints, small amount of abrasion to foot of covers, small amount of loss to rear lower inner edge. Internally bright, small ink stain to Aa4 catching a couple of letters but not affecting sense, signatures Ff and Gg lightly browned, otherwise bright and clean. Previous owners book label and shelf label to front pastedown. With a frontispiece and two other full page engraved plates. Usual attractive Barbou publication. Brunet V:87. Reprint. Full Calf. London: Ackermann and Co., 1841. [8], 38pp, coloured lithographic additional title, full page map and twelve coloured, tissue guarded, lithographic plates, original pictorial boards. Boards rubbed, paper covering boards chipped to edges and corners with small amounts of loss, rebacked. Endpapers browned and heavily creased, some light foxing throughout, but generally fairly clean, a couple of pages including the title, a couple of pages have a bottom corner missing, a few small marginal tears to a couple of the plates and a couple of the tissue guards have been repaired to fore edges. Housed in a cloth chemise, with a title label. With two short A.L.S.'s from Sir Robert Hermann Schomburgk, dated 1847, declining invitations due to previous engagements. Large paper, coloured copy (it was also published in a plain, and presumably smaller, state). Wise notes that "In 1843, when advertising the present pamphlet for sale, Rodd asserted that it was a facsimile reprint of an alleged original edition of which the author was said to have printed twenty copies in 1816. No example of this mysterious original has ever been unearthed ... My own opinion is that no original ever existed ... The motto 'We pity the plumage but forget the dying bird' was taken by Shelley from Paine's 'Rights of Man', 1817, Pt.I, p. 24, 'He [Burke] pities the plumage but forgets the dying bird'. This clearly denies any impression of the address dated 1816". Contemporary half morocco and curl marbled paper over boards, raised bands, spines in seven panels, title in gilt to second panel, author / volume to fourth, remaining panels with central floral spray in gilt, place and date to foot of spine in gilt, t.e.g., curl marbled endpapers. Contemporary full vellum by Frieda Thiersch at the Bremen Binderei, raised bands, spine in six panels, title lettered direct in gilt to second panel, date to foot, single line gilt border to covers, overlapping fore edges, t.e.g. Boards slightly splayed, otherwise quite bright and clean. Bookplate of Elly Bach to front pastedown. Number forty-eight of two hundred and seventy copies. German text. Printed in 16 point Antiqua on Van Gelder paper. Frieda Thiersch (1889-1947), was a student of Charles McLeish, and bound books for the Bremer Presse "some in richly gold tooling, but many in the restrained style of the Doves Bindery" (Oxford Companion to the Book, page 1201), and later bound books for prominent Nazis. The Bremer Presse was founded in 1911 by Willy Wiegand and Ludwig Wolde in Bremen.
