Very good, with some offsetting from the sealing wax, small loss where the letter was opened, a few minor splits and light creasing to the folds. Beautifully framed and matted. Overall, a very pleasing letter, signed by Scott. Scott addressed this letter to James Nairne, Esq., a member of Scott’s Bannatyne Club, a Scottish literary printing society founded in Edinburgh in 1823. Specifically, Scott requests that Nairne proofread Scott’s work for the Ardwalls. He also references Auld Robin Gray, a Scots ballad written by Scottish poet Lady Anne Barnard (neé Lindsay) in 1772. The Bannatyne Club published an edition of Auld Robin Gray in 1825. In addition to Scott’s prose, this letter contains marginal notes by the recipient James Nairne, who forwarded the note to “The H’ble Mrs. Erskine.” He explains that Scott’s references to… Read More

Edinburgh: Archibald Constable and Co., 1824 Three volumes. First edition, first printing. Original gray paper boards with white labels printed in black to spines, untrimmed edges. About good set with light soiling and toning to boards, light spotting to text, spine ends chipped and with loss, some effacement to print on spine labels, previous owner signatures to front free endpapers and title pages. Overall, still a pleasing set, in rare original boards. Todd & Bowden 171Aa. In St Ronan's Well, a small town becomes a hub for fashionable characters when a mineral spring is discovered. In this setting, two half-brothers, Valentine Bulmer and Francis Tyrell, fight for the hand of Clara Mowbray, Bulmer motivated by financial gain and Tyrell by love. Scott wrote the novel in less than six months, though its release was delayed slightly as his publisher convinced him at the last minute to alter a thread in the narrative to preserve the virtuousness of Clara. Edinburgh: Adam and Charles Black, 1874 Later edition. Mauchline boards with burgundy morocco spine, spine compartments tooled in gilt, Falls at the Hermitage to upper cover, Dunkeld and Dunkeld Cathedral to lower cover, all edges gilt. Very good, Mauchline boards very bright, outer hinges neatly repaired, inner hinges lightly cracked but still very sturdy, light staining to endpapers, light foxing to outer leaves, interior generally clean. Overall, an attractive example of Mauchline ware. Mauchline bindings, crafted in the town of Mauchline, Scotland from 1820 to 1933, can be identified by their beveled wooden boards and images depicting Scottish and English landmarks. Intended as souvenirs for visitors to the UK, the bindings were typically made for books directly related to life in Scotland, England, and Wales. Indeed, a story by Scottish poet and historian Sir Walter Scott is especially appropriate here, as are the images depicted on the boards: Hermitage Water is near the semi-ruined Hermitage… Read More
