This sammelband of extracts and other material was collected by noted topographical engineer James D. Graham, who served in the U.S. Corps of Topographical Engineers for much of his military career. In 1839-40 he was astronomer of the surveying party that established the boundary-line between the U.S. and the then new Republic of Texas. In 1840 he was appointed commissioner for the survey and exploration of the northeast boundary of the United States, and was employed along the Maine and New York frontiers until 1843. Description:
Buffalo: Sage Sons & Co, 1856. Very rare lithograph printed in colour and finished by hand. Lithograph printed in colour and finished by hand, one of the earliest depictions of the American Express Company's beginnings in Buffalo, New York. The American Express Company was founded on March 18, 1850 in Buffalo, New York, through the merger of three existing companies active in the express transport of goods, and valuables between New York City and Buffalo and points in the Midwest. These companies were: (1) Livingston, Fargo & Company (formerly Western Express), founded in 1845 by Henry Wells and William G. Fargo, later of Wells Fargo fame; (2) Wells & Co. (formerly Livingston, Wells & Co.), cofounded by Wells in 1846 and under his ownership at the time of the merger; and (3) Butterfield & Wasson, founded by John Butterfield and James D. Wasson. American Express was at first an unincorporated association of investors headed by Wells as president and Fargo as secretary. The company generated enough… Read More

Description:
[London], 1715. Disbound. Mild soiling at edges Unrecorded An unrecorded British petitionary leaflet protesting the recent election of the young Sir Robert Gordon to Parliament for Caithness in Scotland. The petitioner, Sir James St. Clare (or Sinclair), lost to Gordon in the February election and argues here that his opponent was not a valid candidate, being "an Infant, not Nineteen Years of Age," and unable to prove any land holdings in Caithness that would qualify him to be elected. St. Clare notes that he traveled "Five Hundred Miles to make good this his just Complaint." He was evidently rebuffed, however, as Gordon would serve as MP for Caithness from 1715 to 1722. Sir Robert Gordon (1696-1772) was the 4th Baronet of Letterfourie, Sutherland. This extremely rare document is among the first examples of lobbying literature, which first began proliferating in the lobby of the House of Commons following the accession of King George I in 1714 and the Whig Party's massive victories in the elections… Read More

Henry Salt, artist, traveller, diplomat and collector of antiquities, was born at Lichfield, Staffordshire, England 14 June 1780. In 1797 he went to London and became a pupil of Joseph Farington, R.A., and (in 1800) of John Hoppner, R.A. The turning point in his career was 3 June 1802, when Salt left London for an eastern tour with George, viscount Valentia (afterwards Lord Mountnorris), whom he accompanied as secretary and draughtsman. He visited the Cape, India, Sri Lanka, and (in 1805) Abyssinia, returning to England on 26 Oct. 1806. Description:
London: William Sams, 1825. Small folio. (14 x 9 5/8 inches). Title plus 21 hand-coloured aquatint plates after V.Auger and others, 41 unnumbered pages of text with 2 pages text for each plate (except Street Characters which only has 1). Three-quarter red morocco and textured cloth by Zaehnsdorf, spine gilt in 6 compartments, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. The preferred edition, with 21 rather than 17 plates. The fine views have a wealth of detail and a delicacy of shading not often found in aquatints of this period. Another unusual feature is that each plate represents a very specific moment in time, a snapshot of Parisian life, and that each is accompanied by full explanatory text. Published by William Sams, a relatively unknown printer-bookseller, these plates playfully showcase everyday subjects and Parisian life. The text gives both the historical background to the scene, an explanation of the specific moment and occasionally what will happen to the participants in the future. The 17th… Read More

Description:
Nuremburg: J. von Sandart, 1675. Copper engraving with early colour. Printed on laid paper. Title in manuscript ink on verso of sheet. Cleveland Historical Society collection stamp on verso of sheet. Numerous tears and creases in outside margins, which have been expertly repaired. Center fold has been strengthened. An early map of Africa by the great mapmaker Jacob von Sandrart, engraved by Homann. Sandrart's stunning map of Africa is a close copy of Fredrik de Wit's map, 'Nova Africa Descriptio' published in 1660. With the prime meridian running through Ferro Island, the map is typical of late seventeenth century maps of Africa. Like other maps of the period, Sandrart has included a highly decorative and informative cartouche in the lower left corner of the sheet. Homann's continental cartouches aspired to convey the natural history as well as the costume and manner of life of the human inhabitants. Here, while a woman peacefully nurses her baby in a hammock, a native chief stares out at the viewer… Read More

Paris: Chez Pierre Mariette, 1669. Copper-engraved map, period hand colouring in outline. The most important French map of North America of its generation, produced by the country's most esteemed family of cartographers. This very influential map was the official successor to Nicolas Sanson's 1650 map of North America. When Nicolas Sanson, regarded as the father of the renaissance of cartography under Louis XIV, died in July, 1667, he left his flourishing business in the care of his eldest son Guillaume. The younger Sanson continued his father's partnership with the Mariette family, who were prominent Parisian printers. Guillame was determined to publish a new, updated edition of his father's Cartes Generales de toutes parties du Monde, the first French general atlas, originally published in 1657. The map of North America that appeared in the atlas, although masterful, was now considered to be geographically outdated. London: F.J.Sarjent, 1810. Aquatint, printed in colours with hand-colouring, by Sarjent. (Two small expertly repaired tears to blank margins). A beautiful and rare large format view of Edinburgh. Francis Sarjent drew, engraved and published this rare view of Scotland's capital city. This panoramic image is balanced and enlivened by the figures in the foreground of an old sailor (telescope under one arm), who stands talking to two young boys whilst the sailor's greyhound looks on. Various landmark buildings are identified beneath the image: The Bank, The New Prison, Prince Street, The Register Office and the Monument to the memory of Lord Nelson. Sarjent is also credited with having painted the images for a number of the plates in W.Richards & J.Sillett's 'The History of King's Lynn' (London & King's Lynn: 1812). A 19th-century gazetteer notes that 'Edinburgh presents, from almost every point of view whence it can be viewed such scenic and architectural groupings as are perhaps unrivalled in any… Read More

1843. Mezzotint. In excellent condition apart from some very faint foxing on sheet. Image size: 12 1/8 x 9 3/4 inches. A wonderful impression of John Sartain's striking mezzotint of Washington Allston, the famous American painter who introduced Romanticism to the United States. John Sartain was the preeminent portrait engraver in Philadelphia. His success was unusual for a nineteenth century engraver and can be attributed mainly to his adaptability as an artist and his skill as an engraver. Although most of his attention was focused on mezzotint engraving, he also turned variously to lithography, etching, bank-note engraving, portrait painting in oils, and photography. Sartain was held in great esteem, and he worked closely with the leading artists of the day, establishing himself as an eminent figure in the Philadelphian art world. This fascinating portrait of Washington Allston is a wonderful example of Sartain's unique skills as a mezzotint engraver. His fine engraving style brings continuity to… Read More

Description:
Philadelphia: William Smith, 1850. Engraving. Large format, full length portrait of Andrew Jackson. Andrew Jackson (1767 - 1845) served as the seventh president of the United States from 1829 to 1837. Before his presidency, Jackson gained fame as a general in the United States Army and served in both houses of Congress. As president, Jackson sought to advance the rights of the common man against the corrupt aristocracy. Jackson remains one of the most controversial figures in American history. There has never been universal agreement on Jackson's legacy; he was always a fierce partisan, with many friends and many enemies. He has been both lauded as the champion of the common man and criticized for his treatment of Indigenous people and for other matters.

Description:
London: J. Harris, 1795. Engravings. Landscapes by J. Peltro, Figures by J. Neagle. Each sheet backed to restore margins and some small image and textual losses to two plates which have been expertly facsimiled. A wonderful sequence illustrating a late 18th century British fox hunt, in rich, clear engravings by Peltro and Neagle. This is a superb example of the four plate Fox Hunting sequence in which a quiet beginning rises to rich crescendo of extreme muscular exertion of animal and man, thundering hooves and barking dogs, ending in victory. Sartorius' rendition of these events is magnificent. John Nost Sartorius was the only son of Francis Sartorius. He 'lived for much of his life at Carshalton in Surrey from where he exhibited no less than seventy-four paintings at the Academy; thirty-two elsewhere. Among his patrons were the Prince of Wales, Lord Derby and Christopher Wilson' (Charles Lane British Racing Prints p.157). Not in Paul Mellon Collection.
