Description:
London: Printed in the Year, 1712.. [6],46pp. Octavo. Extracted from nonce pamphlet volume. Loose, somewhat tanned at edges and modestly used, very faint offset from ms. note on a formerly adjacent item to terminal page. About good. A reissue of the first edition of the poem originally published as THE IMPEACHMENT: OR, THE CHURCH TRIUMPHANT, with a new half-title, title, Preface and pp. [1]-2 of the text. Madan comments about the original issue: "This poem of some 750 lines narrates events from the St. Paul's sermon to the attempted assassination of Harley in March 1711 and his subsequent elevation to the peerage as Lord Oxford. Its theme is that Sacheverell rescued Church and State from the danger threatened by the Whigs." On occasion, the attribution is to "David" Russell, but Foxon and ESTC revise the attribution to "Richard." MADAN/SPECK 1055. ESTC T94037. FOXON R334.5.

Description:
Oswestry, [Shropshire]: Printed and sold by J. Salter ... [et al], 1788.. 24pp. Quarto (22 x 18 cm, signed as folio). Disbound, with original stabholes visible. A dim but unrepentant copy, with three stamps from a defunct American mercantile library, moderate tanning and soiling, an old tidemark in the lower fore-corners, pencil highlights and general soiling, and a closed tear at the gutter of the terminal leaf. First edition thus. A ten-line preliminary Advertisement indicates the poem was written in 1762 and was never intended for publication. It further claims that it is here printed from a faulty transcription of the original manuscript ("supposed to be destroyed"). The imprint includes co-publishers in London (J. and J. Robinson), Birmingham (Mr. Swinney) and Shrewsbury (Mr. Wood). Salter is credited with 9 publications in ESTC, three of them in Welsh, but this title is not recorded there. However, OCLC locates a single copy, at Cardiff University. OCLC: 896022867.

Description:
Waynesboro, VA, July 1927.. 20pp. Large octavo. Pictorial stiff wrapper. Illustrations. A very good copy. Volume one, number 5, A.L.S.A.P. No 7, edited and produced by Russell Paxton. A sole issue of THE PIONEER SCOUT (March 1926) preceded the debut in March 1927 of the first number of the AMERICAN LEADER. A year of 12 issues under this title appeared before it donned a revised title, AMERICAN SCOUT. Paxton's work was most closely associated with the LSA, a scouting organization founded in 1915 and then absorbed by the BSA in 1924. The Lone Scout programs continued under the BSA umbrella for another decade. While THE LONE SCOUT was the primary periodical of the organization, amateur zines such as this were an integral part of the program. The front wrapper proclaims that 500 copies of this issue were printed, and content includes prose and poetry by Lone Scouts, patriotic essays and scouting news. Issues of this iteration and the next are either scarce or overlooked; OCLC finds only one location, in… Read More

Description:
New York: Abbevillle Press, 1983.. Small folio (35 x 24 cm). Black cloth, lettered in gilt and black. Heavily illustrated in color, with the text in facsimile of the fanciful manuscript. Fine in dust jacket. First US edition of this whimsical enigma by the Italian architect / designer, first published in 1981 in a limited, two volume edition by Franco Maria Ricci. Presented as an encyclopedia of imaginary things, the Codex and its illustrations appear here in company with extensive text in an invented asemic language and orthography. In spite of the author/artist's categorical assertion that it is a wholly fanciful work, there have been a number of attempts to translate it and reveal its hidden meanings, a semblance of a Voynich manuscript for the 20thth century.

Description:
London, 13 April 1951.. Typescript; 8 leaves, quarto. A.l.s.: 1 1/4pp. on single octavo sheet. Typescript rather creased, with short tears at corners, first two leaves dust-soiled at margins, letter modestly dust-spotted; good. An early work by the critic/poet/novelist, here forwarded to "Dear Miss [Erica] Marx," of the Hand & Flower Press: "...I'm sending along with this the long poem for you to see. I quite understand about the keeping up the length of the booklets. This will lead to a very mixed bag in my case ... you can see and decide on the rest later...." The typescript bears a few small manuscript tinkerings. The referenced pamphlet series is Marx's "Poems in Pamphlet," and it appears that Sewell was not published in the series. However, 1951 was an otherwise productive year: THE STRUCTURE OF POETRY appeared under Rutledge & Kegan Paul's imprint, and her first novel was published by Chatto & Windus. She became a US citizen in 1973 and in 1981, she won poetry, fiction, and nonfiction awards… Read More

Washington, DC: GPO / Office of War Information, 1942.. Folio broadside (38 x 28 inches; 97 x 72 cm scant). Printed by offset lithography in colors, with OWI/GPO imprint and date in extreme lower margin. Professionally linen mounted, lower margin with imprint retained, top and side margins trimmed. With signs of minor color fill at apexes of top folds, but otherwise a very good to fine, bright example. Rolled. An exceptionally powerful image, prepared by Shahn in response to the massacre at Lidice, depicting a shackled and hooded man against a brick wall, with the dated newswire report of the Lidice massacre superimposed over the figure, and the brilliant red caption: "This is Nazi Brutality." Shahn worked for the OWI from the Autumn of 1942 until the Summer of the following year, and although he produced a number of images for the agency, only two were actually utilized - the others were dismissed as too violent, or as not sufficiently appropriate to the topic of the home front.
