The final sixty-seven pages describe an 1865-66 journey to Alaska, during which the Sachot travelled to Unalakleat, Nulato, Sitka, and several other places. He includes descriptions of the coast, of Eskimos, and of the animals and places he observed. Occasional minor repairs, most prominent in blank margin of last leaf. Contemporary manuscript notes on several leaves. Overall very good. An important edition of Sacrobosco's works on astronomy and the calendar. A 13th-century mathematician and astronomer, Sacrobosco taught at the University of Paris and is believed to have been of British origin. There is, however, very little reliable information about his life. Much of what is "known" is little more than speculation on behalf of historians of the 16th and 17th centuries. SPHÆRA, as it is most commonly known, is the most famous of Sacrobosco's works. It is a basic account of the spherical geometry underpinning the mathematical astronomy of Ptolemy and his Arabic commentators. Light foxing to first few leaves and plate. Very good. First edition. Safford is still considered the leading authority on Harman Blennerhassett in the wake of his publication of THE BLENNERHASSETT PAPERS in 1864. This volume precedes that better-known work by a decade, but it establishes Safford's scholarly interest in the flamboyant man who provided much of the capital for Burr's scheme against the Spanish in Mexico. Blennerhassett's life has been regarded a mixture of "farce and tragedy," and Safford's work maintains this caricature. HOWES S13

A scholarly edition of Gunnlaugi's Saga, "A love story of great sentimental charm" (EB). Written in Icelandic and Latin, the work is extensively annotated and includes a copious dictionary. The folding plates are of a meeting house and banquet hall from the period 1000 A.D., when the Sagas were actually recited. The Icelandic Sagas hold the seed for all early Norse literature and history and are one of the great sources for Western literature, influencing such works as the Arthurian legends and the operas of Wagner. A later reprint, after the very rare original edition of 1632. Sagard was a Recollet missionary who spent 1623-24 in Huronia as a missionary to the Huron nation. His book, based largely on his own experiences and those of his associates, as well as on contemporary letters and documents, is considered to be the main authority for the history of the first Recollet mission in Canada in the 1615-29, and the main source for Indian life and relations with the French which does not stem from the Jesuits. "Sagard and Champlain were the first explorers to give any very definite statements about the Huron Indian country and what they had learned from these Indians about the Great Lakes Country" - Greenly. Sagra was a noted Cuban doctor and botanist who visited the United States in 1835. He was interested in social and economic issues and gathered much data, including material on prisons. Port-au-Prince: de l'Imprimerie de Mozar, 1790. 10pp. Original paper wrappers, gathered signatures. Very clean. Untrimmed and partially unopened. Very good. A statement by Peynier, Governor General of the colony Saint Domingue, concerning the decrees set forth by the National Assembly and their application and effect on the colony. These decrees came at a crucial time for Saint Domingue as the French Revolution gained momentum. Many of the large plantation owners hoped to bring about independence from France and to assert a more powerful role for the aristocracy of the colony. Peynier's tenure was marked by his loyalty to the state and his opposition to the Assembly with whom he fruitlessly tried to negotiate. Rare, with only two copies located in OCLC, at Columbia and The New York Public Library.

A central report in the discussion surrounding revolutionary activity in Saint Domingue, which tacitly vows to respect the racist colonial social system. "The Decree of October 12, 1790...contained a very important declaration of [the National Assembly's] general intentions toward the colonies. A letter addressed to the Colonial Committee regarding what the author sees as a contradiction between the National Assembly's famous Decree of March 8, 1790, and the instructions of March 28. A notable piece which proves that the ambiguity of the famous instructions in Article IV of the Decree concerned at least one inhabitant of San Domingo. The said article stated that "all persons, twenty-five years of age, owners of real estate or taxpayers, should be held qualified voters," thus igniting the mulatto population to demand just representation and setting the stage for the ensuing revolt. [Cap Français, 1789. Broadsheet, approximately 8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches. Some dust soiling along lower edge, occasional faint foxing. Very good. A defense of the importance of France's colonies, with a particular emphasis on the business and economic values, by the Marquis d'Aussigne. He warns of the consequences of a split between France and its Caribbean colonies, urging the French National Assembly to allow provincial administrations in the provinces. This desperate attempt to maintain aristocratic control over France's colonies came at the emergence of the Revolution and is a significant example of the futile attempts of the large planter class to preserve power and order. [Cap Français, 1789. 3pp. on a. single folded sheet. Cap Français was the capital of the northern province of Saint Domingue, and Bacon de Chevalerie was the first president of its provincial assembly. In this declaration the Assemblée proclaimed itself a permanent body and distributed its activity between four offices. The local assemblies were still technically illegal under french law. Extremely rare, with only one institutional holding in OCLC, at the John Carter Brown Library. OCLC 859254837

Writing under the pseudonym of "Captain Flack," several early Westerns are attributed to Bolingbroke, including A Hunter's Experience in the Southern States, The Texan Ranger, The Texan Rifle Hunter, The Wigwam in the Wilderness, and the present volume. Internally clean. Very good. This is the Litchfield copy, with the bookplate of Edward Sands Litchfield on the front pastedown. An interesting book of travel and hunting in the American South, by Percy Bolingbroke St. John, the pseudonymous "Captain Flack." Included are accounts of hunting in Texas, Arkansas, Louisiana, and Mississippi, with much on American quadrupeds, fish, and reptiles, as well as a chapter on "bee-hunting." "The outstanding merit of this rare and fascinating book is the author's meticulous attention to detail, based upon his wide range of activity and his particular flare for recording realistically and vividly his pursuit of the fauna of the American South" - Clark.
