N.p.: [publisher not identified], 1850. First edition, 8vo, pp. 20; removed from binding, wanting wrappers; very good. "Among the people of this country - on the floor of Congress, and to some extent in the Navy itself, there is a prevailing sentiment that our naval organization does not come up to the state of the times, to the progress of the age, or to the requirements of the country; does not, for its millions of expenditure, return a fair equivalent of practical efficiency, or even of honorable reputation" (p. 3). London: J. M. Richardson, 1823. First edition in English, 8vo, pp. [4], 475, [1]; recent half tan calf over marbled boards, gilt-lettered direct on gilt-paneled spine; fore-edge of first two leaves very slightly chipped; all else near fine and sound. This is the first volume in the proposed series of English translations of select Persian classics, "chiefly intended for the use of the students at their colleges." Wikipedia notes that Abū-Muhammad Muslih al-Dīn bin Abdallāh Shīrāzī, better known by his pen-name Saadi, also known as Saadi of Shiraz, was a major Persian poet and literary figure of the medieval period. He is recognized for the quality of his writings and for the depth of his social and moral thoughts. Saadi is widely recognized as one of the greatest poets of the classical literary tradition, earning him the nickname "Master of Speech" or "The Master" among Persian scholars. The Gulistan, containing stories and personal anecdotes, was completed in 1258. It is "interspersed with a…

Description:
London: Rapp & Carroll, 1967. First edition thus and first edition in English, 8vo, pp. 47, [1]; fine copy in original blue cloth, dust jacket a little ribbed at the extremities. Saarikoski (1937-1983) was a prominent Finnish poet and translator. The Finnish Wikipedia notes: "As a person, even before the term became familiar, Saarikoski was a 'celebrity' whose activities were followed and who liked to tell the newspapers about his affairs. Both his person and his production were affected by heavy alcohol consumption. This led to a delirium attack and hospitalization as early as 1968 ... Still, he did not change his drinking habits and continued on his chosen path until his death. In addition, his last wife says that Saarikoski smoked about three packs of North State on his best days, and was almost constantly in a state of at least a couple of glasses (in the 1960s, Saarikoski himself says in his diary that he ruined his lungs and condition with two daily packets and at least one or two bottles of…
