Description:
49 letters, 83 manuscript pages, 12 postcards, correspondence mainly written in ink, in very good, clean, and legible condition, many letters written on Howard University letterhead.

George H. Safford was the seventh secretary and treasurer of Howard University in Washington, D.C., serving from January 19, 1899, to September 21, 1909. Safford, like Howard's president at the time, Rev. Jeremiah Eames Rankin (1828-1904), the institution's sixth, was white. (Rankin served from 1890-1903). Safford, like Rankin, also appears to have been a New Hampshire native.
Safford prior to his appointment at Howard worked for G. Peterson & Co., the contractors who built the Washington reservoir in the 1880's and as Second Assistant Postmaster General in the 1890's. After his service at Howard, Safford worked in the Department of Agriculture in Washington.
The correspondence generally concerns family and domestic affairs and only occasionally touches upon his work at Howard.

folio, single sheet, measuring 7 ½ by 12 inches, formerly folded, light damp-stain, else in very good, clean condition.
Formation of the future Constitutional Union Party- proposed by a close friend of Lincoln's – Southern papers viewed it as a "Black Republican plot", 1858.
Rare. While there are undoubtedly copies of this circular to be found, as later distributed, there seems to be none listed under Sargent's name in WorldCat, and it may be that this proof copy is unique.
A handsomely printed form intended to be sent to disaffected Southern Democrats by former "know Nothings" who hoped to unite northern Republicans with old Whigs in the South in a new political party before the 1860 election. The letter says nothing directly about the hotly contentious issue of slavery, proposing instead to form the new Party around the "Crittenden amendment", a constitutional compromise proposed by the Senator from Kentucky, guaranteeing the permanent existence of slavery in the… Read More

Savage, recently returned from Green Bay, writes to Dudley seeking the post of Indian Agent there and comments upon the Oneida, York and Buffalo Indians, and the removal of the latter.
"My Dear Sir,
… I hasten to answer your enquiry as to Mr. Colton he is a gentleman that I saw but once at Green Bay and that was two days before I left there. When in New York about a month before I saw you he (Colton) made himself known to me and told me the great attachment he had for the Indians and that he intended to go to Washington this winter and vindicate their cause, and publish a series of numbers on the ill treatment of the Indians, I encouraged him in the measure, for I supposed that discouragement
was equal to encouragement believing that he was one of those who was sent out to spy out the difficulty between the Government and the Indians, for… Read More

After discussing removing the Mercer County seat in his own district, Sawyer writes: "We are yet hammering at Origon , we will not be done with it for two weeks yet. The resolve in favor of Oregon and the whole of it and in favor of Wright who voted in Senate to ratify the Webster Treaty to give to Great Brittain a great portion of the State of Maine I oppose and shall continue to do so … I also oppose a Resolution puffing J. Important Source Book for W. E. B. Du Bois' The Black Man and the Wounded World
This book was an important source book for W. E. B. Du Bois' The Black Man and the Wounded World: A History of the Negro Race in the World War and After, the work was of great personal importance to Du Bois, however, it remained unfinished. In the years during and immediately following World War I, W.E.B. Du Bois was deeply involved in organizing and writing a multi-volume work on the role of African Americans in the American Expeditionary Force. He hoped that African-Americans, through their participation in the conflict, would finally achieve their full rights of citizenship in the country they helped to defend. As Du Bois progressed on his work, he expanded his hopes that the participation of the soldiers of the African diaspora in the European conflict would… Read More

Lieutenant General John Burgoyne's 8,000-man army occupied high ground above the fort, and nearly surrounded the defenses. "My dear Hood, I am inclined to the opinion that what with horrid murders - awful conflagrations - bank suspensions and presidential receptions you Philadelphians have become so engrossed in your municipal affairs as to forget that you have friends out of the sounds of Christ Church bells. I do hope that in time the quiet for which our good city was once so celebrated may return and that her denizens may give a thought and a line to those whose hearts are at home tho' their persons are away. I cannot possibly leave just now as I am out on business through the country almost every day – but I will try and give you a call soon. – You are quite a politician my young sir – but you forgot to notice this fact about "Hard and Soft" and it is, that the late State convention on the 8th convention said nothing at all about the currency compared with their proceedings on a former occasion and even the last convention wouldn't touch such a pitiful trickster as David Todd! Description:
Printed Circular Letter, 1 sheet, measures 4.75 x 7 inches, with original printed mailing envelope, advertising "Father Columbia's Co-operatives", of which Shupe was also a trustee.
New York lawyer Shupe reports on the slow progress of the Harlem Commons Syndicate, which was expected to eventually number 1,000 "claimants", though many, out of "fear or distrust" or "pure negligence" had not yet returned their power of attorney authorizing him to act as their agent. A group of opponents who had shown "warlike demonstration" were now "scattered around in piles of pulverized nastiness". A "coal property" was being developed under the "care of Lieutenant P. F. Fremont", which had orders for 2,000 tons of coal, to be sold at $ 10 a ton, etc. Dock and basin construction would also begin soon, and Shupe felt certain that Syndicate stockholders would "proceed to reduce our claim to cash."
The Syndicate and all its grandiose plans was a legal fantasy based on the contention that hundreds of… Read More
