I went to research the market for this book and found that there are many offered for sale out there, with many different appearances. Quite a few are being claimed as First Editions, which they clearly aren't, since they don't even look alike. Different cover designs, different dust jacket art. They can't all be firsts, and, in fact, none of them are. Grossett & Dunlap didn't do firsts often, if ever. They also didn't provide print counts, later publication dates, or anything else to tell you when a given copy was published. (This means that heirloom Wizard of Oz you have at home is not likely a first edition, either.) The original First Edition was printed in Berlin, in German, in 1923. The First American Edition was published in 1928 by Simon & Schuster. Therefore, this is not a first edition. First edition, 1894 on the title page. No dust jacket. Some wear at the corners and edges of the spine. Dark green fabric, not worn through at any point, with gilt printing on the spine. Black endpapers are cracking over the spine joint. Pages are clean, tight and unmarked. Owner's name on first page after the front endpaper. That page and the next embossed with "Botanical Museum, Harvard University". New Riverside Edition. In excellent condition for its age. Also very rare.

Pages are clean, tight and unmarked, with many illustrations. This would be a very good book, other than one problem. The binding has split behind the endpaper, at the half-title page. Not just showing the binding fabric, but clean through (see photo #4). This kind of repair is beyond my abilities, so I am selling this as-is, leaving any repair to the buyer. A rare and interesting volume, first published in 1914. My copy would be one of the better looking copies on the market, if it weren't for this unfortunate break. Priced accordingly.
