Description:
A little foxing here and there, and some fraying of the spine heads and heels, but all pages clean and tight. One foldout has two small tears.Arguably the greatest diary in English by possibly the world's greatest diarist. This is Henry B Wheatley's 1896/1897 10-volume publication (the diary in 8 volumes, plus the index published in 1924 and the Pepysiana published in 1928). This is the diary the world knew until Robert Latham's and William Matthews' nine-volume definitive edition of 1970-1983.These eight volumes of the diary belonged to and bear the bookplates of Duke Georg Alexander of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1859-1909), eldest son of Grand Duchess Catherine Mikhailovna and a cousin of Emperor Alexander III of Russia. He was a Major General in the Russian Army, a skilled musician and the founder of the Mecklenburg Quartet.

Description:
Very Good +. No dust jacket, but volume is unmarked except for stamp of former owner, Prof. K.M. Setton (1914-1995) of the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton (he was then Curator of the Henry Charles Lea Library at the University of Pennsylvania). Binding tight, all pages bright, clean and intact. Except for lack of dust jacket, tiny tear on flyleaf, and some tanning of spine, the volume is like new.Probably the first treatment in English of the considerable influence toward reform of penal institutions inspired by the enlightened practices of two major houses of correction in Amsterdam. The distinguished Swedish-American sociologist and penologist Thorsten Sellin (1896–1994) was one of the pioneers of scientific criminology.

Morrow, the eminent Plato scholar and philosopher, and his inscription to the subsequent owner. Spine somewhat cracked and abraded, front hinge starting.James Stephen (1829-1894) was a jurist, lawyer, distinguished judge and writer, particularly influential in Indian jurisprudence, and the uncle of Virginia Woolf. Liberty, Equality, Fraternity (1873–1874) was written principally as an attack against John Stuart Mill's essay On Liberty, and in opposition to Mill's neo-utilitarianism. Stephen argued for an ordered freedom through some forms of compulsion or restraint, and that without these, civilized society would be impossible. This is the second edition, with Stephen's long Preface, occasioned, as he… Read More

All pages intact, clean, bright and unmarked.A first edition of the first of Gene Stratton-Porter's best-selling books set in the (formerly) famous 13,000 acre Limberlost swamp in Adams and Jay counties in Indiana. Once a major wildlife and nature preserve, the swamp was drained and gone by 1910. About 10% has been restored, today, known as the Loblolly Marsh Nature Preserve. An icon of turn-of-the-previous century Indiana, Stratton-Porter was one of the best-selling authors of her day, a naturalist and environmental activist who tried to save the Limberlost and other wetlands, a nature photographer, and a silent film-era producer who founded her own production company, Gene Stratton Porter Productions, in 1924.Freckles is the story of an orphan who earns his way into society through courage and perseverance. In the course of the story, Stratton-Porter describes the… Read More
