Richmond [Virginia]: Adjutant and Inspector General's Office, 1862. [1]p. Bifolium. 7¾ x 5 inches. Faint toning and foxing; Very Good. Illustrated in Parrish & Willingham (2429), this Confederate General Order was issued during the Battle of Fredericksburg. The battle was fought in and around Fredericksburg, Virginia and is considered the most one-sided Confederate victory of the war. Union Army casualties were more than double those of the Confederacy. Adjutant and Inspector General Samuel Cooper's orders are particularly aimed at protecting Confederate States' civilians and enforcing military discipline: "I. Encampments of troops near towns and villages must be avoided..."; "III. Private property is invariably to be respected, and must not be taken or used, except when indispensable for the public service..."; "IV. The reckless destruction of fencing, wood and other property of the citizens...cannot be too strongly condemned." Etc. Cooper "remained throughout the war the highest ranking…

Description:
Boston: I. Sack, c. 1930s. Two trade catalogs, 40pp and 16pp, with price lists. Very good. American antiques dealer Israel Sack, Inc. was founded in Boston in 1903 as a furniture repair business. As their antiques business thrived, they started to sell reproductions of antique fittings and hardware used to restore (or authentically reproduce) period furniture. The catalogs illustrated metal drawer pulls, escutcheons, hinges, door locks, door knockers, ornaments, and castors; wooden finials and pendants; and iron hinges; lighting fixtures; carved wooden chair legs and furniture feet, mirror and clock pictures, and numerous patterns of wooden inlay. Two price lists show the firm's re-location in the 1930s from Boston to New York City. A "50% Discount" ink annotation suggest the effects of the Great Depression on their trade.

Intimate letter between two friends, "Sally" of Lancaster, Pennsylvania and Miss L. Clifton of No. 3 Eleventh Street in Philadelphia. Sally briefly describes the town of Lancaster and a garden there: "A dull, dreary, rainy, disagreeable day. What shall I do to kill time? No Fanny here to cheer my drooping spirits, no intimate friend to sympathise with me in all my afflictions. We were so unlucky as to get seats in the Monday's stage. I was just playing an interesting game at gammon with a gentleman when the stage stopt; I had almost one a pair of gloves 10/6 penny. What a disappointment! but you know they are indispensably necessary or, we should not know how to value the numerous blessings we are continually receiving: so I ran upstairs slipt on my wig, and after receiving the most affectionate adieus from all my attendants and…

[Likely Boston. After 1924.] Photograph, tinted. 14½ x 19¾ inches. Unique? An outstanding example in fine condition. Excellent circa 1920s photograph of the Boston Symphony Orchestra advertising Buescher True Tone Saxophones: "In late 1924, the first bassoonist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, Abdon Laus, who performed the saxophone solos in the BSO's concerts when required, began to put together the Boston Saxophone Orchestra, drawn from professional and good amateur players in the city [...] [T]he ensemble rehearsed assiduously, and also grew in size, with one concert comprising 85 players.¹" During the mid 1910s to the late 1920s, interest in the sax grew dramatically in popularity in the United States. This 'saxophone craze' resulted in numerous saxophone ensembles being formed as dance or jazz groups. Many did not have the classical roots as did the Boston Saxophone Orchestra. Thus, one aim of the Boston Saxophone Orchestra was to "counter the populist tendencies associated with the…
