This is the story of two French colonist children who grow up side-by-side and fall in love in Mauritius, only to be torn apart by class expectations. PAUL AND VIRGINIA is punctuated by abolitionist themes, which this version makes more explicit: rather than dying in a shipwreck as in the original work, Virginia is rescued by a formerly enslaved man.
