Photographs were taken on April 21, 3 days after the earthquake by Burt Hodson and F. M. Walsh.

He spent time in, and writes about, San Francisco, Stockton, Sacramento, Grass Valley, Downieville, and other gold rush towns. His account is considered both readable and reliable.
