Beautifully rebound edition, brown leather over boards, five raised bands, black leather title plate, gilt lettering and decorations at spine, gilt decorations around outter edges of covers, marbled edges, marbled end papers, beautifully engraved end title page, written in Latin. Title page showing Faith and Religion as pillars upholding the Spanish monarchy within an aedicule or classical architectural element. Two figures representing allegorical representations of Spain (a soldier in armor holding a sheaf of wheat) and America (with feathered headdress and holding a sheaf of corn or maize) flank him. Two vignettes at the bottom of the pillars show a man battling a many-headed snake with the motto: 'Domat omnia virtus,' and a beehive with the motto: 'Omnia nos itidem.' Description:
London: George Redway, 1900. Early Edition, First Printed in 1897. Small Octavo, 7 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches. Original black cloth over boards, ink and gilt lettering and decorations at front cover and spine, gilt top edge. A scarce occult, literary hoax by Edward Irenaeus Prime-Stevenson, who is most-often remembered for his 1906 pioneering gay-themed novel Imre, published under the pseudonym Xavier Mayne. On top of the interesting provenance of this volume and its rarity, the cover art of this volume, portraying a mysterious fortune-telling figure beside a black cat, is truly excellent. A reprint of an extremely unique Gypsy system from the 18th Century. This is one of the rarest early works on Playing Card Readings and their interpretations. Very Good, cloth very slightly faded, spine ends and corners very slightly bumped, pages agetoned with some spotting, damp stain to bottom inner pages throughout but not affecting text.

Description:
[California]: [Thomas Swanney], [1901]. Quarto, example of eastern binding late 1890-1900's. Green cloth over paper. Chinese characters in black on front cover translate to: 1901. This appears to be a ledger book that has been used instead as a scrapbook. Each page consist of a sheet approx. 21 inches folded once, printed with vertical red lines with Chinese script on fold. This interesting and varied collection contains clippings, photos and other ephemera from the early 1900's, kept in the pages of a hand-bound Asian ledger book. An ownership inscription reads: Thos. B. Swanney Trip to California, Jan 27, 1901. The book begins as a scrapbook with clippings from famous California sites such as Golden Gate, Cliff House, Seal Rocks, and China Town - all photos from Waters Nickel Series; and clippings from various magazines or postcards. The scrapbook records a sightseeing trip that would seem to begin in San Francisco and proceed through Santa Barbara along the coast by rail to Pasadena and Pikes… Read More
