Tall 8vo, publisher's original black cloth lettered in gilt on the spine,. xvi, 420 pp. A fine copy, the cloth well preserved, the gilt bright, hinges perfect and sharp, the textblock clean, some of the inevitable foxing to the prelims and edges as is typical. Holdsworth and Lewa Sherpa, members of a British expedition. Kamet was the first summit over 25,000 feet to be climbed, and was the highest summit reached until the first ascent of Nanda Devi five years later. Due to its position near the Tibetan Plateau, Kamet is remote and not as accessible as some Himalayan peaks. It also receives a great deal of wind from the Plateau. Early explorers of the… Read More

Description:
New York: Viking, 1988. First American edition. 8vo, black cloth and boards in the dustjacket. 547. Very fine. A unique book in the history of modern literature, in that its publication resulted in a death sentence for the author being decreed by Islamic fundamentalists (which is still in effect). Inspired in part by the life of Muhammad, Rushdie used magical realism and relied on contemporary events and people to create his characters. In the United Kingdom, The Satanic Verses received positive reviews, and was a 1988 Booker Prize Finalist and won the 1988 Whitbread Award for novel of the year. However, conservative Muslims accused it of blasphemy and mocking their faith. The outrage among them resulted in a fatw calling for Rushdie's death issued by Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini, then Supreme Leader of Iran. The result was several failed assassination attacks on Rushdie, who was placed under police protection.

An unusually well preserved copy, the wrappers untouched and unrestored, some chipping or loss to the spine panel of the wrapper confined to the lower section, quite clean and showing just occasional age internally. VERY SCARCE IN THE ORIGINAL WRAPPERS UNTRIMMED AND UNBOUND. Coleridge began to write these poems in 1797 in Stowey (Somerset). He wrote ‘Kubla Khan’ after returning from Germany in 1800 and finished the last work, ‘The Pains of Sleep’, shortly before publication. Coleridge states that although it may appear that the metre of ‘Christabel’ is irregular, in truth he has created a new principle--that of counting the accents in each line rather than the syllables. “Though the latter may vary from seven to twelve, yet in each line the accents will be found to be… Read More
