Description:
The Compagnie Générale Transatlantique's best known and largest ocean liner was launched by this French firm in 1916 and this "Aristocrat of the Ocean" crossed from Le Havre, France to New York with cruises elsewhere until 1939. Collection of five menus, each small 4to (8½" X 11", opening to 17" X 11"), with 1936 issue dates of 1 July, 16 July (two, with differing front covers) and 3 May (two, with differing front covers). Very good. Bits of minor wear only. Front covers are all pictorial, with inner left bearing the day's menu in French and inner right the same in English -- down the center appears the "Menu Suggestion." Those from July 1st and July 16th both note they are "Raymond-Whitcomb Cruise." July 1st cover depicts a woodblock engraving of a 3-masted ship labeled "Navire Du XVIe Siècle" (Ship of the 16th Century) and those from July 16th and May 3rd are color reproductions from the "Les Costumes Normands de jadis" French women's fashion series: "Jeune fille de St. Valéry en Caux," "Jeune… Read More

Description:
New York: Reinhold Publishing Corporation, 1943. Hardcover. Small 4to. Tan cloth with orange lettering, dust jacket. xvi, 380pp. Illustrations, line drawings, two 2-color foldout diagrams. Near fine/good plus. Jacket edgeworn and rubbed, with several edge chips and a lightly sunned spine -- but complete and overall not unattractive. A tight and lovely first edition of this noted architect's city study -- handsomely inscribed and signed by him in black ink on the half-title page: "To Wallace H. Halsted / with sincere regards / Eliel Saarinen / Cranbrook, May 1944." Halsted was a realtor in Rockford, Illinois, and Cranbrook is the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, which Saarinen served as director and educator. This Finnish-born American architect (1873-1950) known for his Art Nouveau structures was the father of famed modernist architect Eero Saarinen. Scarce.

Description:
This Slovakian immigrant was elected a Democratic representative to Congress from Chicago in 1907, and on April 1, 1934 became the "Dean of the House" (longest-serving member), a post he held for 18 years, 7 months and 5 days -- the longest anyone has held that post. TLS, 1p, 8" X 10½", Washington, DC, 1939 August 5. Addressed to Gerald Salters. Near fine. On "House of Representatives U.S." letterhead, Sabath as chairman of the Committee on Rules attempts to appease an angry constituent regarding "the 30 day furlough of W.P.A. workers.... we have done all in our power to eliminate the lay-off provision but due to the solid Republican vote combined with 30 or 40 Democrats who are opposed to President Roosevelt's policies and the Administration our efforts were in vain. Nevertheless I shall continue my fight for the elimination of the provision...." Although the Committee on Rules that Sabath chaired from 1937 on was powerful, he was considered a weak… Read More

Green cloth with gilt lettering and black, ivory and pale blue pictorial stamping. 302pp, (2pp ads). Tissue-guarded frontispiece, numerous small line drawings. Very good. Mild bit of binding edgewear, else internally tight and nice; charming nonauthorial 1905 gift inscription ("A reminder of / 'When you were a boy'....") on front flyleaf. Attractive first edition of this Huck Finn-ish boy's yarn, the third novel by this prolific boys' adventure story writer (1870-1954) -- with choice autograph addition: Tipped opposite half-title page is a Typed Letter Signed from Sabin, 1p, 7½" X 11", La Jolla, CA, 7 January 1940. Addressed to notable future Lincoln scholar Arnold F. Gates (1914-93). Near fine. Description:
The well-known Presbyterian minister was British born, but preached in Boston for much of the 1820s, publishing his sermons and the 1820 "Ecclesiastical History," then switched to Episcopalianism and becoming first rector of that city's Grace Church; he moved to Vermont in 1830 and preached there until his death. LS, 1p (lettersheet), 4½" X 7½", "Elliott St." (Boston?), n.d. Very good. Faintly age toned. Boldly penned missive to "My Dear Brother," which integral address leaf identifies as "Rev'd. Mr Burr," apparently a Boston clergyman. Intriguingly cryptic note to a colleague in which Sabine pleads, "I am much in the same predicament as last month, not able to be out so as to preach my preparatory lecture this evening. I am almost ashamed to ask again your help and would not have been so troublesome could I have obtained acceptable help from some other brother to whom I have been less burdensome but all hope fails and if Brother Burr cannot help I must venture at a great risk or shut the… Read More

Wrappers lightly edgeworn, with small abrasion (likely from price sticker removal) at lower left corner of front wrapper. Description:
Although Grover Cleveland had electric lights put on the White House Christmas tree in 1895, it was this 15-year-old Spanish immigrant who in New York in 1917 developed and popularized the modern concept of a string of small lights painted different colors to decorate trees and avoid the fires often caused by Christmas tree candles; his family firm (NOMA Electric Company) monopolized the industry for a time. Signed First Day Cover, 6½" X 3½", cancelled at Washington, DC on November 5, 1970 and with "First Day of Issue" noted. Fine. 6-cent "Christmas" stamp and 5-cent "Christmas 1963" stamp (featuring lit Christmas trees) at upper right. No decorative cachet at left; no distracting recipient's name/address. Across the horizontal cancellation lines around the words "First Day of Issue," Saddaca signs large and bold in blue ballpoint. Small portion of original transmittal envelope present. Very uncommon.
