Description:
London: The Hogarth Press, 1924. First edition. Hardcover. Vita Sackville-West's 1924 novel Seducers in Ecuador is seldom seen thus, in near fine condition and still bearing the original dust jacket. One of 1,500 copies, this copy features a beautifully bright, square, and tight binding, with sharp corners, paper spine label fully intact, and only a hint of wear to the spine ends. The contents remain bright with no previous ownership marks and light, intermittent spotting. The red-stained top edge retains strong, unfaded color and differential toning to the endpapers corresponding to the dust jacket flaps confirms what the lovely binding already testifies – that this copy has spent life jacketed. The dust jacket is in two pieces, split along the rear hinge with the upper third of the spine missing and the balance of the spine toned. The dust jacket is protected beneath a removable, archival quality clear cover. Vita Sackville-West (1892-1962) was a poet, novelist, associate of the Bloomsbury… Read More

Distinct from the trade edition, the publisher issued 260 copies “on imported Dutch charcoal rag paper, numbered and signed by the author, of which 250 copies are for sale.” Each set was hand-numbered in red on the half-title verso limitation statement, below which Sandburg signed in black. This limited issue is bound in quarter cream buckram with paper spine labels over blue laid paper-covered boards. The contents, featuring untrimmed fore and bottom edges and gilt top edges, are bound with blue and yellow silk head and foot bands and endpapers of the same blue laid paper as the boards. Each volume was issued in a plain dust jacket of the same blue laid paper employed on the boards and endpapers. The publisher apparently… Read More

Description:
London: William Heinemann, 1917. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This compelling inscribed association copy of the first edition of solider-poet Siegfried Sassoons (1886-1967) First World War poetry collection, The Old Huntsman, is inscribed on the front free-end paper To Mrs. Colefax. | from the author. | June. 1917. The front pastedown bears Sibyl and Arthur Colefaxs bookplate. While the grey, paper-covered boards are original, the book has been skillfully re-backed. The fresher grey-paper spine and printed paper label defer to the original aesthetic while ensuring binding integrity and providing a clean shelf appearance. The original boards show moderate toning and scuffing with shelf wear to edges and corners. The contents are clean with no spotting and modest age-toning, primarily evident to the otherwise clean untrimmed fore and bottom edges. The top edge shows some shelf dust. The authors inscription and the Colefax bookplate are the only ownership marks. Sibyl Colefax (1874-1950),… Read More

This first edition of The Sunbirds of Southern Africa is in fine condition in a near fine dust wrapper, featuring extensive colour and b/w illustrations, as well as a gramophone record affixed at the rear pastedown. Dublin and London: Maunsel & Company, Ltd., 1916. First, limited, and numbered edition. Wraps. This is an inscribed, dated, and hand-emended author's presentation copy of the limited and numbered first edition, copy 193 of 500. Inked in four lines on the half title, the authorÂ’s inscription reads: “To | The Rt. Hon. L. A. Waldron | with the compliments of the Author | James Stephens Oct. 16th. 1916”. Additionally, the author hand-emended and initialed line two on page 10. This copy is hand-numbered “193” on the limitation statement. The recipient, Laurence Ambrose Waldron (1858-1923) was an Irish businessman and politician. Most relevant, he was MP for Dublin St. StephenÂ’s Green from 1904-1910. It was there, in 1916, that “Stephens observed the fighting around St. StephenÂ’s Green in Easter week 1916; his instant book on the rising, The Insurrection in Dublin (1916), is regarded as the most vivid account by a contemporary observer of the changing moods and scenes of Dublin during the rising,… Read More

Description:
London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1923. First edition. Hardcover. James Stephens was both a poet and novelist, and in this presentation copy both skills are on display. This authorÂ’s presentation copy of the first edition is inscribed in sixteen lines filling the front free endpaper recto: “Dear Major Whitall: | At the end of this book there | should be a small poem | thus: | After great heat, great frost | Comes following. | Turgesius was lost | By the daughter | Of Maelshaughlin the King | By Grania of high Ben Ghulban | In the North | Was Diarmuid lost. | The strong sons of Uisneach | Who never submitted | They fell by Deirdre | James Stephens”. The only previous ownership mark in the book besides the authorÂ’s inscription is the elaborately gilt and printed small leather label of “W.VAN.R.WHITALL” affixed to the facing front pastedown. Major William Van R. Whitall of Pelham, New York, was apparently a significant collector; the 1927 sale of his library at the American Art Galleries… Read More

Description:
Dublin and London: Maunsel & Company, 1919. New Edition. Hardcover. This is an inscribed 1919 edition of Irish writer James StephensÂ’s personal account of the 1916 Easter Rising in Dublin. The inscription, inked in two lines on the title page between the title and authorÂ’s name, reads “To Alice & Harry Saffin | From James Stephens”. At the time, Stephens was serving as Registrar of the National Gallery of Ireland. “From the vantage point of the gallery premises in Merrion Square, Stephens observed the fighting around St. StephenÂ’s Green in Easter week 1916; his instant book on the rising, The Insurrection in Dublin (1916), is regarded as the most vivid account by a contemporary observer of the changing moods and scenes of Dublin during the rising…” (Dictionary of Irish Biography) This inscribed copy is "A NEW EDITION" of 1919, so stated on the title page. Description:
Freelands, 1924. First and limited. Wraps. This privately printed, limited edition of 1924 publishes six poems by Stephens, beginning with the eponymous “Little Things”, among his best-known poems. Limited to two hundred copies and issued in string-bound grey card wraps, this is both a scarce and fragile publication. It includes a frontispiece engraving signed by the Irish artist, Power OÂ’Malley. Condition of this copy is good, nearly complete but with some inevitable signs of its age and fragility. The gray card wraps are present, as is the original binding cord, though the covers are detached from the contents. There is minor loss to the corners and clear tape reinforcement, both along a split to the upper half of the spine and securing a loose piece of the upper front cover. The contents are mildly age-toned but otherwise clean, with no spotting or previous ownership marks. James Stephens (1880?- 1950) began to contribute stores to the journal United Irishman (later Sinn Fein) in 1905, “at… Read More

Description:
Dublin: Maunsel & Co., Ltd., 1909. First edition. Hardcover. This is the first edition of the authorÂ’s first book of poems, signed and dated contemporary to publication by the author. Stephens signed “James Stephens | April 1910” on the upper front free endpaper recto. This is the only mark found within the book, which is in very good minus overall condition. The binding of quarter brown cloth over tan, paper-covered boards is square and tight, though with shelf wear to extremities, light overall soiling, and a semicircular sticker affixed to the lower spine featuring a hand-inked “E22”. The contents are clean and show no spotting. The edges, including the untrimmed fore and bottom edges, show only age-toning. Transfer browning, ostensibly from the pastedown glue, affects the title page and final free endpaper. Stephens (1880?- 1950) began to contribute stores to the journal United Irishman (later Sinn Fein) in 1905, “at first anonymously and generally without payment” before becoming a… Read More

Description:
London: Macmillan and Co., Limited, 1912. First edition. Hardcover. This is an inscribed first edition copy of the authorÂ’s best-known novel. Stephens inked his three-line presentation on the front free endpaper recto: “James Stephens | to | Stephen Gywnn”. Condition is good plus, sound and complete, the defects only superficial and aesthetic. The original green cloth binding remains tight and unfaded, though with a modest forward lean, various minor scuffs and blemishes, and light shelf wear to extremities and joints. The contents are quite bright. We find no previous ownership marks other than the authorÂ’s inscription. Spotting is almost entirely confined to the endpapers. The page edges show light soiling. The book is housed in a quarter Morocco solander case featuring a rounded green quarter Morocco spine with raised bands over green cloth sides. The Solander is sound, though uniformly spine-toned to brown and with various minor exterior scuffs and blemishes. The Crock of Gold is “a… Read More
