Description:
Boston (also New York): Lee and Shepard (also Charles T. Dillingham), 1885. First Edition. Decorated Cloth. Very Good. Oblong, 24.5 by 17 cm, 9.75 by 7.75 inches. Unpaginated, with sixteen chromolithographic plates, two with movable doors revealing things behind, and each of the plates accompanied by two text leaves, one carrying an apercu of verse from a famous poet and the other with a beauty hint or an allusion to some aspect of a woman's toilette. The book is a beautiful production, and while it fits squarely in the nineteenth century tradition of feminine gift books, it also stands apart from the genre in its shape, its focus, its tasteful arrangement of objects in the plates and then how the plates relate to the text. Arguably this is a gift book that can be viewed as a continuation of the then moribund emblem book tradition. Light wear to cloth by spine extremities and board corners. One chromo plate with edge roughness, tiny chip and repaired small closed tear. A light quarter… Read More

Description:
Lacquer, Calf Boards, Fabric covering box. Very Good Minus. N.d., circa late nineteenth century. 25 by 20 cm. With 24 hand-tinted and/or colored photographs, all embedded in very thick card leaves, which have gilt edges. The margin of each photo is embellished with traditional Japanese watercolors of flowers, trees, birds, including ducks, pheasants, cranes, fish, waves. The watercolors tend to be diagonally arranged, with the artwork predominantly occupying two kiddy corners. In some of the watercolors, the colors jump off the page with their brightness, and it is these that distinguish the use of watercolors from mere color printing. Overall, the watercolors are exquisite and set this album apart from most other albums of this ilk, plus this one comes with the original decorative box from K. Tamamura. (Kozaburo Tamamura (1856-1924) was a photographer based in Yokohama from 1883 on and an originator of "Yokohama Shashin", the kind of tourist photographs present in this album and reaching a… Read More

Description:
New York and Chicago: J. L. Taylor. Leporello. Near Fine. N.d., circa early 1920s. 18 by 10 cm. Four panel leporello promotional circular for men's suits. Illustrations are rendered with color printing. The men are all wearing boaters, suggesting spring and summer weight suits. They are tall and very slender, with the chiseled looks that were the ideal -- not so different from a lot of male fashion models of today, really. The front of the fold-out features a cut-out or shaped young women of the era, and from her dress we can surmise that the circular was issued in the very early twenties. J. L. Taylor had a large tailoring operation in both Chicago and New York until the Second World War. Specializing in pure wool fabrics for men's clothing, it employed hundreds of tailors and seamstresses. Scarce, with no copies found on OCLC. An inked name of the recipient in space intended for such on front. Otherwise, minimal wear, especially considering this was mailed.

Description:
Colombo (Ceylon, now Sri Lanka), 1903. Half Morocco. Very Good. 8vo. 18.5 by 14.5 cm. iv, 44 pp., the leaves made of heavy card stock. The author, a colonial officer for the British army, would later publish "The Annals of the King's Royal Rifle Corps," which contained his color illustrations of uniforms, arms and equipment, and other works. From this work, it is clear he had artistic aptitude, and as an officer in Ceylon, undoubtedly a lot of free time to indulge in the creation of this work. It would seem that this work was written with an eye on possible publication, but that did not come to be. Few will not be charmed by the many vignettes of badges and coats-of-arms, mostly rendered in bright watercolors, with some done as ink drawings. Also illustrated are flags and banners. Some of the tissue guards are heavily foxed, while the cards proper sometimes have offsetting from this soiling. A large chipped loss to the leather spine, with a partial loss of one letter of title. Venetia (Venice): Giacomo Hertz, 1680. Hardcover. Very Good. 12mo. [24], 732 pp + [72] unpaginated index. 58 engraved plates, 3 folding maps. Libreria Vinciana (Autori Italiani del 1600) 499. History of Italian monarchs during darkest of the Dark Ages, or the period following the fall of the Roman Empire til around 1000 A.D., a period obscure to even most ardent history buffs and scholars. Consulted by Manzoni in his research of Longobardi, or the Lombards. Each of the plates of ancient kings decorated with emblems and baroque ornamentation. Contemporary vellum attractive. Binding tight. Light soilage at most to leaves -- mostly just age toning. Discreet very old writing below half title plate and backside of same leaf. A small wormhole in upper left affecting pages in the 200s but only a few pages where actual letters are lost, and even these pages reading loss is insignificant. Overall a very good copy.
