A nice copy of an uncommon book, originally printed for private distribution. Taylor was born in 1800, in Clark County, VA and offers a look at the whole of the 19th century including the Civil War and after.

A very nice copy with only light shelf-rubbing and a bit of sunning at the spine; previous owner gift inscription on the front pastedown. Originally issued in installments in the Huntsville Weekly Independent between 1883 and 1884. Of Taylor and his work, Owen writes, "A native of Madison, being a grandson of an emigrant of 1809 (four years after the first permanent white settlement), a teacher and public official, the writer was eminently qualified for his work. In its preparation he made use of traditions, books, and public records. The style is dignified and philosophical, and the arrangement and method of treatment evidence careful preparation. . . ." Owen p. 1197. The local history remains uncommon even in later 20th century reprints. Brannen 1761.

In contemporary red morocco with decorative gilt on both covers and spine and previous owner name stamped in gilt on the front board. 24 issue, each with one or two engravings that serve as frontispieces, all present. Light rubbing and scuffing to the extremities; a bit of separation starting at the bottom of the rear joint, binding remains solid; contemporary gift inscription in pencil, and a later bookplate; contents with varying degrees of foxing and toning, particularly at the plates and the adjacent leaves; occasional owner pencil bracketing in the margins, but generally clean. Early volumes from a long-running Methodist periodical in a better than usual binding on this mid-century periodical.

Ex-personal library with a bookplate on the front free endpaper as well as a date stamp and a 4-digit number; stamp on the bottom edge of the textblock. A bit edgeworn as well as a slight forward lean to the binding. Some residue on the pastedowns from where a a dust jacket protector may have been adhered--not reflected on the jacket itself; fairly minor. Even toning to the page edges throughout, scattered foxing towards the rear. Dust jacket is in very nice condition and retains the price on the front flap. Relatively uncommon.

[Richmond, 1920?]. Full Leather. Poor binding. Octavo. 76 pp., frontis, ports. Only edition. As issued in leather, four leaves of mounted plates including the the frontispiece. Significant moisture damage to the binding and the contents with tidelines throughout; leather at the joints are starting to split. An interesting memorial of a young man of Richmond society who died in an accident when, according to the local paper, he was lighting a fire in his room with coal oil and his clothing ignited. This volume comprises biographical sketch, letters, and collected writings, including many pieces for his school paper, as well as several short memorial pieces. This copy is warmly inscribed by Tennant's father, W. Brydon Tennant to Tennant's peer and contributor in this volume, Eppa Hunton IV, grandson of Confederate Generals Eppa Hunton and William H. Payne. Condition notwithstanding, a very nice association for this extremely uncommon volume held by only 3 institutions (OCLC: 2123321).

[Washington]: Press Job, Print, 1866. Broadside. Broadside. 12" x 4.75." Printed in black on recto only. Light foxing and faint, early dampstain to the bottom left corner; old folds, but quite fresh. Very good to near fine. This broadside outlines the lottery scheme to benefit for the Soldiers' and Sailors' Orphan Home Fund. As well as a benefit concert after which the prized were to be announced. This benefit was scheduled to be held at the Grover's Theater in Washington, D. C. on August 2, 1866, here postponed to October 11. The advertisement states that 300,000 tickets were for sale at $1.00 each and 75,000 presents awarded. Presents range from cutlery to "1 Three-story Brick Residence, H street between 6th and 7th" valued at $18,000. The nature of the benefit speaks to a significant problem facing the country in the aftermath of the Civil War, the abundance of orphaned children. Rare in commerce.
