Description:
248 pages with folding frontispiece, diagrams and appendix. Small octavo (7 1/4" x 5") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. First published in 1985. The ultimate strategy guidebook for Chinese Chess. Chinese chess, or "elephant chess," has intrigued the powerful and the quizzical for centuries. Although its rules are similar to the well-known Western game, subtle and fascinating variations must be mastered in order to understand the strategies it requires. Author H. T. Lau breaks decades of silence for any publishing on this game and introduces Chinese chess to Westerners. With the aid of 170 diagrams, "Chinese Chess" walks players through the board, the movement and values of the pieces, basic rules for capturing and defeating an opponent, techniques and game winning tactics. This book includes eighty mid- and end-game exercises designed to sharpen playing skills and strategy, and concludes with two appendixes devoted to the elegantly constructed games found in "The Secret Inside the… Read More

x+287 pages with diagrams, tables, appendixes and index. Royal octavo (9 1/4 " x 6 1/4") issued in green cloth with white lettering to spine. From the library of George M Foster. Texas Pan American Series. 1st edition.James Taggart compares the folklore of two communities of Nahuat speakers of the northern Sierra de Puebla, in Mexico. Because of close historical, linguistic and cultural ties, these groups share many stories, but Taggart clearly illustrates how their differing positions as Indians in Mexican society influence the content of these stories. One community, for example, is unusually autonomous in their dealings with the Hispanic populace. In their tales they retain many Aztec religious personalities, including the anthropomorphized serpent gods Quetzalcoatl and Coatlicue. Like that of the ancient Aztecs, their oral tradition exhibits and integrated view of human-animal relationship. In contrast, the Nahuat whose ethnic community is dominated by their Hispanic populace have replaced many of… Read More

In this revised version of his doctoral thesis, Tandeter examines the resurgence of silver production from the famous silver mines of Potosi (Bolivia) between the 1730s and the 1790s, shedding light not only on the changes which explain this upturn, but also on the traditional structures that survived through the entire colonial period. Translated from the Spanish-language edition of 1992, published simultaneously in Cusco (Peru) and in Buenos Aires.

41 pages. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's stapled wrappers. Inscribed by the author on front wrapper. Offset reprint from Political Science Quarterly Volume LXI, Number 1. To most of us, the colonizers of the American continents are the Spanish, Dutch, French, and English. We generally overlook the Negroes, who were among the first settlers—forced, it is true—to come to these shores. So numerous were they, in fact, that we find Alexander von Humboldt, at the beginning of the 19th century, writing of a possible colored empire in the Caribbean. American civilization, both Anglo-Saxon and Latin, has been influenced in important respects by the presence of the Negro. Condition: Signed on front wrappers. Light edge wear else very good.

xiv+293+xi pages with folding map at back and index. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's red cloth with gilt lettering to spine and blind-stamped pictorial boards in original jacket. Seventh printing. Into this illuminating study of the meaning of Mexico s recent history Frank Tannenbaum has put the distillation of more than three decades of the familiarity with that country. Having traveled Mexico from the Rio Grande to the Guatemalan border, from the Gulf to the Pacific, and having been friendly with peasants, city folk, politicians, philosophers, artists and presidents, he understands Mexico as few foreigners can understand it. This book begins with a rapid survey of significant events from Hernan Cortés to Porfirio Díaz; continues with a searching analysis of the foreign and domestic policies of the present Mexican regime. In a final chapter it demonstrates the enormous importance to general United States foreign policy of Woodrow Wilson s and Franklin D. Roosevelt s conduct… Read More

First edition. Modern East African savannas serve as the primary model for the paleoenvironments of early hominids. However, throughout the Neogene there have been cooling and during trends through time and fluctuations in seasonality. As a result, many modern East African savannas are drier, with more severe dry seasons, than during some periods in Plio/Pleistocene in which early hominids lived. Our understanding of these moister and less seasonal periods is crucial for reconstructing early hominid lifeways. Condition: Edge wear, corners bumped, rubbed and creased else very good.

Description:278+[1 ad] pages with diagrams and tables. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5") bound original wrappers. From the library of >font color=green>Lothar Schmid. (Linde-Niemeijeriana:5278) First edition. The great Ostend tournament had scarcely ended when, ten days later, the Nuremberg Congress began. Although originally planned as a grandmaster event, the tournament failed to attract a number of the firs-rank stars - among them Lasker, Maroczy, Burn, Rubinstein, Marco and Teichmann. The reluctance of the Ostend participants to undertake the long journey to Germany's famous medieval city was understandable enough - given the great length and arduous nature of the the preceding tournament. There were, of course, other reasons keeping some players away: according to Bachmann, Maroczy and Marco were anxious to avoid meeting with Tarrasch because of "a recent press battle" with the German master. Other factors may have affected the entry list. The tournament organizers attempted a time limit experiment, but… Read More

After St Petersburg it seemed to Tarrasch that his home ground was a perfect setting for restoring him to chess supremacy, so the club set out to attract the best players available including the four contestants at St Petersburg. (Bibliotheca van der Linde-Niemeijeriana:5041) First edition.Frank James Marshall was born in New York City, but spent his youth in Montreal where he rapidly rose to the top of the chess scene. Upon returning to the USA, he won the US Championship (although refused to accept the honor, as Harry Nelson Pillsbury did not participate). He was soon recognized as one of the brightest and most creative American chess talents.
Emanuel Lasker was a German chess player, mathematician, and philosopher who was World Chess Champion for 27 years (from 1894 to 1921). In his prime Lasker was one of the most dominant champions, and he is still generally regarded as one of the strongest players ever.
In 1904, Marshall won the very strong Cambridge Springs tournament by 1.5 points over Emanuel Lasker, the first time that the World Champion had been beaten in a tournament in nearly ten years. Dr. Lasker later agreed to play Marshall for the… Read More

118 pages with diagrams. Octavo (8" x 5 1/2") bound in original publisher's boards with black lettering to spine and cover. (Bibliotheca Van der Linde-Niemeijeriana: 5046) First edition. Dr. Siegbert Tarrasch, after several major tournament successes in the 1890s, was widely considered the most likely successor to Steinitz. At one point, Lasker had challenged him to a match and been curtly brushed off.
