Fine red cloth with a fine dust jacket with the slightest wrinkle along the top. This is the American first edition, but it was printed in England and is identical to the UK first. The less famous brother, jJohn apprenticed with Thomas Bewick , then moved to London. The book includes a thorough, annotated catalogue of John's illustrations and designs. The Bewick brothers remain an inspiration to wood engravers. .

Original cloth spine with photo printed boards that are mildly rubbed. The book focuses on architecture in North India and Pakistan. Pages iv, 39 plus photo plates and a glossary. This copy, according to a small stamp on the free endpaper, was sold at the London Book Co. in Rawalpindi. A very nice survey, the author being "sometime Head of the Delhi School of Architecture"..

Written in the early, dark days of WW Two, when the Nazis seemed unstoppable. There were strong British -Norwegian ties, and this journalistic account of the German invasion is part first hand account, and part propaganda, but very much of the time. Pages 143. A cover illustration of Nazi boots trampling on Norwegian mountains. Nice copy, clean and tiight inside and out, with very little edgewear, and pages slightly browning..

Philadelphia: Carey & Hart, 1841. Book. Illus. by Kenny Meadows. Very Good Plus. Hardcover. First U.S. EDITION. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Witty portraits of the English, by a popular woodcut illustrator for the Illustrated London News. Wm. Thackeray is the author for the sketch, The Fashionable Authoress, and another Captain Rood and Mr. Pigeon. Douglass Jerrold authors five, including The Cockney, Debtor and creditor, and The Printer's Devil. Nimrod does two, Henry Brownning authors three, and Wm. Howitt contributes The Young Squire. The humorous was a new direction for popular, inexpensive illustrations. This copy is in the original green , blindstamped cloth, with a new cloth spine and the old backstrip laid down. Original near fine terra cotta cloth with a bright gilt title on the spine. Dustjacket has one tiny tearat a bottom coerner, otherwise near fine and NOT price clipped. Wonderful photos of an important mosque in the desert of Tunisia. Text translated from the French by Richard Howard. .

Very nice original red cloth, with very slight edge wear and fresh black title on both unfaded spines. Mild foxing here and there throughout both volumes. The author was a poet essayist and translator, a major figure of French Romanticism (wikipedia). He spent a year in 1842 wandering in Egypt (most of volume one), then on to Beirut and Constantinople (volume two). Originally published in 1846 as Voyage to the Orient. An excellent read as an example of mid 19th Century French orientalism. SCARCE.

A splendid copy in the original beige cloth with bright gilt title on the front and unfaded spine.Only a hint of edge wear. Fishing tackle and sailboat in darker brown on the pictorial front board. Inside, a prior owner signature dated 1889 on the first page after the endpaper. Otherwise no stains or or browning or prior owner marks. The first 133 pages are a hunting story by Thompson. /Then sections on fishing, archery, boating, camping, hiking, and winter sportt. Interestingly, ten pages near the end on the camera. And the last section is on early baseball. .

Cream cloth, with some slight rubs, an engaving of an archer on the front , repeated on the title page. Title on the front board and the unfaded spine. Very clean and tight inside, with no prior owner marks. Poetry celebrating and observing nature, including THE ARCHER. With the original glassine dustjacket. Author was the literary editor of the New York Independent according to an enclosed article about his brotherwho becme a prominent Seattle lawyer. A newspaper obituary of Maurice Thompson is also included loose. .

London: The Art Journal Office, 1882. Book. Illus. by frontispiece engraving of Bewick and 100 Bewick woodcuts. Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. Folio - over 12 - 15" tall. Original publisher brown cloth with a lighter brown panel on the front cover that includes the title and a Bewick bird on a branch. Corners bumped, spine ends worn, spine darkened with the gilt from the title worn off. Back hinge has a three inch tear near the bottom, but hinges for this large book are solid. The publisher made two sizes of this production, and this is the large paper edition of which only 75 copies were made, this being number 42. Title continues, "with an Account of His Career and Achievements in Art , with a Notice of the Works of John Bewick". Exceptionally clean inside. Book plate of Edward Bellamy, and no other prior owner marks. .

Original pictorial binding with sailors flag signaling on a ship, only a hint of edgewear, title in white on the spine. Hinges perfect. No prior owner marks or signatures. Inside, as new. The dust jacket has lots of edge wear but only one small tear along the top edge, and one at the hinge at the bottom of the spine. A celebration of the colony just before the start of World War Two. SCARCE, especially with the dust jacket. .

Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1865. Book. Very Good Plus. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 12mo - over 6¾ - 7¾" tall. Original purple cloth, faded to beige on the spine. Gilt title still bright and the binding is unrubbed. A hint of wear at one corner, and bit of cloth gone at both spine ends. Now protected in a clear mylar sleeve. Inside, the endpapers are pristine, with no prior owner marks. Hinges are fine. The paper block is excellent, with no stains, no browning or foxing. The 24 pages of ads at the back are dated December 1864. Overall very good plus, a copy ready to be read for Thoreau's observations after several trips to Cape Cod. .

Thubron is a great travel writer, and this is a long trek through China before it became so relatively easy , and so many joined the China travel horde. Pages 307 with index. As always with Thubron, a fun and rewarding read, this time to help recall what China was 25 years ago. Very clean and tight, no prior owner marks. Appears to be an unread copy. .

Very nice full tree calf, the original binding with professionally repaired corners and top edges of both spines. Red title labels with gilt titles on the spines. Marbled endpapers, with hinges tight and all plates present as called for. Light and occasional foxing in both volumes. The first Swedish edition was 1788 in a smaller format; this is the next edition and has the largest illustrations. The English edition followed, also 8 vo. in size. The volumes cover travel from 1770 to 1779. Thunberg was student of the great Swedish naturalist, Linnaeus. He set out to explore Japan and its flora and fauna. A nice, very solid edition of this classic, written during and just after the Civil War. I find no date of publication for this set, in original brown cloth with a design of black wheels and leaves on the front of each volume, and title in gilt on the unfaded three spines. Heavy, thick books that have no hinge issues and very slight wear to the cloth. There are two rubs to the front cover of volume one only. An early and important account of the battles and military leadership of the Civil War. .

London: T. Hurst, 1833. Book. Illus. by color frontispiece,cover illustrations and other woodcuts by Robert Cruikshank. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 16mo - over 5¾ - 6¾" tall. Subtitled "Containing full in...uctions for the use of that ancient and noble instrument the bow, ---". Original light green paper covers with male archer on front and female archer on the rear , both by Cruikshank. Edgewear and front hinge beginning to split, but still solid and protected with a mylar, clear dustjacket. Almost half of the paper on the spine is missing, including the title. Three hand colored woodcuts inside, two of them repeating the archers on the outside covers. Very clean and tight, with no browning or stains to the paper. Bookplate of George Weare Braikenridge, Broomwell House on the inside front cover. Quite a rare book, especially still in its fragile, illustrated paper bcovers. .
