The less famous brother, jJohn apprenticed with Thomas Bewick , then moved to London. The book includes a thorough, annotated catalogue of John's illustrations and designs. The Bewick brothers remain an inspiration to wood engravers. .

Very nice original red cloth, with very slight edge wear and fresh black title on both unfaded spines. Mild foxing here and there throughout both volumes. The author was a poet essayist and translator, a major figure of French Romanticism (wikipedia). He spent a year in 1842 wandering in Egypt (most of volume one), then on to Beirut and Constantinople (volume two). Originally published in 1846 as Voyage to the Orient. An excellent read as an example of mid 19th Century French orientalism. SCARCE.

Original publisher brown cloth with a lighter brown panel on the front cover that includes the title and a Bewick bird on a branch. Corners bumped, spine ends worn, spine darkened with the gilt from the title worn off. Back hinge has a three inch tear near the bottom, but hinges for this large book are solid. The publisher made two sizes of this production, and this is the large paper edition of which only 75 copies were made, this being number 42. Title continues, "with an Account of His Career and Achievements in Art , with a Notice of the Works of John Bewick". Exceptionally clean inside. Book plate of Edward Bellamy, and no other prior owner marks. .

Heavy, thick books that have no hinge issues and very slight wear to the cloth. There are two rubs to the front cover of volume one only. Edgewear and front hinge beginning to split, but still solid and protected with a mylar, clear dustjacket. Almost half of the paper on the spine is missing, including the title. Three hand colored woodcuts inside, two of them repeating the archers on the outside covers. Very clean and tight, with no browning or stains to the paper. Bookplate of George Weare Braikenridge, Broomwell House on the inside front cover. Quite a rare book, especially still in its fragile, illustrated paper bcovers. .
