The protagonist of this story also appears in two of Thackeray's subsequent works, The Newcomes (1853-55) and The Adventures of Philip (1861-1862)..… Read More

London: Bradbury & Evans, 1849 First edition, first printing. Publisher's original cream boards, lettered and illustrated in blue and green. A very good copy with some wear and rubbing to the boards, some exposure to corners and spine ends; internally, some light scattered foxing. Scarce. The History of Samuel Titmarsh and the Great Hoggarty Diamond follows a man whose magical diamond allows him access to wealthy and powerful people through encounters that only the rich can experience. The moral explains that a good wife is the most valuable treasure a man can possess. Written in 1841, the story's somber tone reflects the personal tragedy that plagued William Thackeray's life during its writing. Thackeray's wife Isabella experienced severe postpartum depression after the birth of their third child in 1840. Isabella attempted suicide while he was working away from home; she survived the attempt but never recovered emotionally. . First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good.

Both volumes were published almost 10 months apart, which further adds to this title's complex and rather questionable (Sadleir) issue points. 1967 August 31, 1967. From Harry S. Truman to former Secretary of the Treasury John W. Snyder. One page typed on Truman's personal letterhead and signed by Truman in black ink. Fine tri-folded letter, with just a light rust mark from a paperclip and a couple of very light and tiny spots to verso. Overall, a beautiful letter. In this letter, Harry S. Truman replies to his former Secretary of the Treasury, John W. Snyder, informing him that his assistant Rose Conway "found no record of my having any personal appointments with Speaker Sam Rayburn or Vice President Barkley on the 25th or 26th of June 1950." The end of June 1950 was a very significant moment in U.S. - and world - history, marking the beginning of the Korean War. On June 25th, 1950, 90,000 communist troops from North Korea invaded South Korea along the 38th parallel. Two days later Truman made the announcement that he was sending U.S. air and naval forces to aid South Korea. Harry S. Truman was the 33rd President of the United States, and… Read More

Overall, a lovely manuscript, without any nicks or tears. Memory When the cares of present being, Wake a tumult in the breast, To the Past the spirit fleeing, Lulls its anxious fears to rest. Herbal, book or faded letter Murmurs of departed years, Fancy freed from Custom's teller, Smiles serenely through her tears. Roaming then the hallowed places Where we quaffed love's fountain new, When Hope's young and winning graces Pure enchantment round us threw; With the primal transport glowing, Tossed upon the sea of Youth; Life's pale star its course retraces, Back the tides of feeling roll, And the dear remembered faces Rise again before the soul.
