Description:
London: Printed by William Bowyer ... and Sold by John Whiston, 1744.. [4],xliv, 3 plates of monastic arms, [10],722,[54]pp. Folio. Old calf, neatly rebacked to style (but with incorrect date at toe of spine). Portrait. Foretips a bit worn, binding a bit rubbed, light occasional foxing, but a very good copy. Second, considerably enlarged edition, published under the auspices of the Society for the Encouragement of Learning. The first edition was published at Oxford in 1695, and by 1709 Tanner had ready a second, improved edition. However, that edition never appeared, though much of the additional material was incorporated into this edition, which was edited by his brother, John Tanner. The Bowyer ledgers record the edition consisted of 500 copies. There are a few early annotations, and a correction or two to the text, and an 1846 inscription on the front pastedown indicating this copy was a gift of another Thomas Tanner in 1846. ESTC T97254.

Cambridge: Printed for and sold by the Author [et al], 1776.. [3],4-16pp. (lacking the typographic frontis noted in ESTC). Octavo. Extracted from nonce pamphlet volume. A bit tanned, small chip in blank top edge of title leaf, otherwise near very good. First edition of this late, but rather uncommon collection of anti-Deist verse quatrains by the prolific hymn-writer, music teacher and bookseller. According to some sources, Tansúr published 43 anthems and 197 Hymn tunes besides canticles, Anglican chants and cannons. His work was particularly influential on early American hymnology. This title is rather uncommon: ESTC locates only 3 copies, at the BL, Cambridge and NY Historical. ESTC T126402. OCLC: 812579315.

London: Printed for J. Wilford ..., 1730.. 40pp. Octavo. Extracted from nonce pamphlet volume, lower edges untrimmed. Some foxing early and late, outer leaves dust smudged with some minor ink speckling, title-leaf partially detached and with short tear at gutter, small snag toward gutter of terminal leaf touching a couple of letters, otherwise about good. Second edition of Elizabeth Thomas's gossipy poem (through page 26), but the first to include the reprint of Swift's 1729 (pp.27 to end). In addition to her own work, Thomas (1675-1731) is remembered for her association with Dryden, who baptized her "Corinna." She sold Curll a bundle of Pope letters that he published and she coauthored with him an attack on Pope, who ridiculed her in THE DUNCIAD. Her final years were spent in ill- health and included three years in debtor's prison. The first edition to bear her name appeared posthumously, in 1743. Uncommon: ESTC locates six copies in North America. TEERINK-SCOUTEN 673. FOXON T159. ESTC T95773.
