Near fine, with some insignificant edge wear and old creases rendered nearly imperceptible by the professional backing.. Pictorial map. One of the more famous of the colorful pictorial maps by brilliant artist of the genre, Ruth Taylor White. The map is bordered with frieze containing quotes about wine at top and bottom margins. Description:
London: Smith, Elder and Co, 1844. First printing. Unbound, tied with string. Octavo. iv, 44 pages. Fine, with just slight toning.. Thom was a British Crown judicial officer, and makes a very able argument in favor of British ownership of the Oregon Territory. He refutes the American claims advanced by Robert Greenhow in his 1840 Memoir of the Northwest Coast.

This pamphlet was published in the thick of the Oregon boundary dispute. With the outbreak of war between the United States and Mexico in April 1846, the Americans could no longer afford the distraction and risk of a possible second war, and the Oregon question was finally settled along the 49th Parallel by the Oregon Treaty signed in June of 1846.

Ref. Description:
[Annapolis]: Maryland State Archives, 2009. First printing. Softcover. Quarto. [ii], 46 pages. New. Well illustrated in color and black and white. The only detailed account of Abraham Lincoln's passage through Annapolis on his way to and from the Hampton Roads Conference in early February, 1865.

The extensive research for this project turned up interesting but forgotten aspects of local and national history. For example, the Maryland Legislature was debating ratification of the 13th Amendment to abolish slavery on the very morning that President Lincoln quietly walked past the State House, unbeknownst to the legislators inside. The amendment had passed Congress two days earlier on January 31st, and had been hand-delivered to the Maryland Legislature on February 1st.

Research also rediscovered both the proper location of the train depot in 1865 as well as the route of the military railroad tracks hastily laid through town by General Benjamin… Read More
