Osaka: Poole Women's College, 1890. A delicate and magnificent Japanese rarity in fine condition: 3 volumes, contained within a printed wrap-around band, together in a single pictorial sleeve, each volume approx. 4½ x 3¼", printed and bound in the Japanese manner in decorative paper wrappers, each with a double-page folding color woodblock panorama (The Daimyos Procession, The Procession of the Mikado, and The Bridal Procession of the Common People), and each followed by 26 (for a total of 78) color woodblocks of samurai, court officials, nobles, servants, merchants, girls of high and low station, nurses, weavers, cooks, soldiers, courtiers, fishermen, etc., indeed, the entire panoply of Japanese society. From the Preface, "These books are not only designed to please children, but to show the manners and customs of the ancient and modern people of Nippon. The fine illustrations afford an important aid in this respect. It is through the eye that the understanding itself is most quickly reached."

First edition, small 8vo, with a presentation typed letter signed from Taber tipped in (mentioning Erle Stanley Gardner and Frank Cobb), plus 3 other typed letters laid in, all addressed to Crane bibliographer, Ames Williams, on a variety of literary matters, all June-October, 1948. Ezra (not Pound) is a fictional skeleton and alter ego in Taber's closet. Jacket with marginal rubbing and a few short tears repaired, else very good.

Londini: sumptibus editoris excudebant M. Ritchie & J. Sammells, 1790. 4 volumes, 8vo, stipple-engraved frontispiece portrait in volume I, engraved vignette arms of the editor, Henry Homer, on the title pages; slightly later full red straight-grain morocco, gilt supralibros of Homer on all covers, and enclosed by double gilt rule, gilt-paneled spines with green morocco labels (faded, and at one time retouched); a very good set. of an "elegant and a correct edition, with an elaborate index" (DNB). A pencil note on the flyleaf states that this was Homer's own set, but in the absence of other evidence we make no attribution. The works of Tacitus were not published in their entirety until the 1515 Rome edition, and all editions afterwards stem from this, although its editor, Beroaldi, apparently deviated "from the true ancient reading" (Dibdin]. First edition, 8vo, pp. 201; pages foxed, spine faded with small crack at top, extremities slightly rubbed, covers stained and discolored, else good or better in contemporary red cloth, gilt lettering on spine. Tacon y Rosique was a captain-general of Cuba (1834-1839) who ruled as a tyrant, but made many reforms regarding law and order, and made many municipal improvements in Havana. Sabin 94193: ""In regard to charges arising out of his conduct as governor [of Cuba]."" Palau 326520. NUC locates 1 copy.

[Kyoto]: Kyoto Shoin, 1992. 4to, 2 vols, each pp. 48; text in Japanese with English captions and summary; full color illustrations throughout; pictorial pink and blue boards; light foxing to final leaf of vol. 2, else fine. Toy Museum series nos. 23 & 24, displaying toys produced between about 1860 and 1950. This includes largely ephemeral paper products like omochae, sugoroku and models, but dolls, toy trains, puzzles and the like are also included. Most involve a militaristic theme.

N.p., n.d. [likely Providence, 1881. 12mo, pp. 36; straight-grain black limp morocco with gilt-ruled sides, "Royal C. Taft" in gilt central on the upper cover; near fine throughout. With ruled blank sheets for "Memoranda" bound in at end, and containing the signatures of Gov. Alfred H. Littlefield, Lt. Governor Henry H. Fay (both dated 1882), plus the signatures of approximately 70 other Rhode Island legislators from the House and Senate, on 11 pages, most with place of residence. Taft, a Representative from Providence, has signed the list along with his colleagues. He was elected Governor in 1888. A manuscript list of names (prospects?), most with check marks, probably in Taft's hand, is laid in. A choice memento of the 1881-82 Rhode Island legislative session.

First edition, 12mo, pp. xxii [i.e. xxxii], [2], 98; original green cloth boards, brown leather label on spine; boards and label worn, textblock in rough shape, with endpaper, flyleaf, and final few leaves in back reattached, pp. 5-10 torn through the middle, retaining all text; fair only. Bookplate of the estate of William P Sheffield, a U.S. Representative from Rhode Island, and the ownership signature of Anna Elizabeth Hardy of New Port [sic], Rhode Island. Taggart was an invalid and suffered from insomnia and chronic pain throughout her life. Her poetry reflects her condition, and was put forward in the introduction as "defective" in some respects but remarkable for the circumstances in which it was produced. The 22-page preliminary includes a synopsis of her life and letters of note. American Imprints 27004.

Takada was artist on the shows Creamy Mami and Kimagure Orange Road. Madoka is largely a collection of soft portraits of women.

Tokyo: Chikuma Shobo, 1972. Nineth printing, 8vo, pp. 253, [3]; six pages of illustrations; full yellow cloth, black title on spine, fine in slightly wrinkled glassine dust jacket and fine pictorial slipcase. Qui Jun was a noble orator, women's rights activist, and revolutionary. The title of her biography refers to a line in her death poem, written shortly before her execution: "Autumn wind, autumn rain, they make one die of sorrow." The author, Taijun Takeda, was himself a leftist activist and novelist who was jailed for agitating for a strike. Few of his books have been translated into English.

Tokyo: Kokon Shoin, 1928. First edition, 8vo, pp. [2], 3, [1], 6, 430, [2]; 4 plates, text in Japanese; full gray cloth; ex-library, call number labels on spine and stamps on title page, spine soiled, edges spotted, good and sound. Takeda was a prominent scholar of the Manyoshu, the oldest extant collection of Japanese classical poetry.

Third printing, 8vo, pp. lxxx, 502, [4]; 5 maps, one folding; full green cloth, gilt title on spine; light shadows on endpapers, else fine, in very good, edge rubbed dust jacket. With a manuscript inscription tipped in to endpaper, appearing to be a transcription of a waka by Ueda Akinari, followed by an ink mark "Yasuda." Also on endpaper is a later, separate ownership signature, "'Tom' Watanabe."

Tokyo: Society for Japanese Cultural Information, 1948. First edition, 8vo, pp. 370, [1]; illustrated throughout in text; original limp green cloth bound with string, paper label on cover; fine. Depicts many interesting scenes from Occupied Japan. Written as a guide book for occupation personnel and their families.
