Description:
The sole UK printing by Hoods Fine Printers, Middlesborough in c1930s (nd). The Book is in Near Fine condition. A collection of 15 woodcuts (all signed by Viva Talbot in the plate) depicting various stages of the steel making process. Sewn limp printed card covers. Covers lightly spotted and lightly creased to the yapped edges. The book measures 26 x 39 cm. Internally the 15 striking B/W woodcuts are in fine condition. The woodcuts are titled (and have been signed in the plate) and each one has been printed on thick paper stock (blank to the verso). The 15 woodcuts detail the process of steelmaking from 'Digging Ironstone in Northamptonshire' to 'Rolling A Slab into a Plate'. An extremely scarce production with no copies located on JSIC and only one copy located on Worldcat. It is unclear as to how many copies were printed but it is likely that the print run was very small. Viva Talbot (1900-1983) was a talented artist who specialised in wood engraving. She knew many of the prominent wood engravers of… Read More

Description:
The First UK printing published by Publications from Pall Mall Ltd., London in 1937. The book was issued by the publishers as 'The Coronation Edition'. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition. Some pushing with very slight splitting to the extreme spine tips. The original blue publisher's boards remain very clean with just some tiny rubs to the lower corners. The gilt titling and decorations remain bright. Free from inscriptions and erasures. Light toning and spotting to the text-block and prelims. Mild offsetting to the blank end-papers with light spotting to the prelims with one small mark to the fore edge of the title and frontis pages. This edition was issued with two different wrappers. This is the more scarcer of the two and is a stiff glassine pictorial wrapper. The WRAPPER is in Very Good condition with edge-wear and loss to the spine ends and rear upper edges due to its fragility (see images). Some closed tears and nicks in places. Priced at '7/6 net' to the lower front flap. The… Read More

Some light toning and spotting to the text-block with mild offsetting to the prelims. Free from inscriptions and erasures. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good++ condition. Description:
The First UK printing published by Peter Davies, London in 1945. The BOOK is in Very Good++ or better condition with just some very light pushing at the spine tips. Light fading to the spine ends corresponding to the losses to the wrapper spine. Free from inscriptions and erasures. A small neat bookseller sticker to the lower front pastedown. The WRAPPER is complete and is in Very Good+ condition. Some losses to the spine ends and the lower front edge. Mild edge-wear with some nicks, light creasing and minor losses. The unattributed wrapper artwork remains striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. The book, the author's first novel, was printed in conformity with the authorised war economy standards and is a very scarce survivor. It is highly likely that the book would have been printed in a small print run. I can only see one copy having appeared at auction in the last 30 years, and it is unclear as to whether that copy had a wrapper or not. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books… Read More

The BOOK is in Very Good condition with the original publisher's light red paper covered boards, with quarter maroon linen spine. Titles in black to spine. Some edge-wear and discolouration to the boards (see images). The corners are bumped but the binding remains firm. Internally clean and bright with just a few light underlinings. A classic journal of life on Great Blasket Island in the early twentieth century. Extremely elusive as the true first printing with COPAC listing only a handful in institutions.
