Three volumes. 19th century half maroon morocco over cloth with raised bands, gilt spine titles and decorations, and marbled endpapers. 8vo. xiii, [1], 436 pages; viii, 432 pages; and viii, 412 pages. Ex-Sondley Reference Library with tasteful bookplate on the front pastedowns, inconspicuous embossed stamp to titles and a few other leaves (including three of the plates), small number stamp on verso of titles and in margin of one other leaf in each volume, and faint shadow of a removed call label at base of each spine. Bindings are lightly rubbed on extremities, a little sunned on the spine, and boards show some light soil and sun (most noticeable on third volume). Light foxing to titles with only occasional traces elsewhere. Light horizontal crease to each frontispiece and short marginal tears along same line, in some cases neatly repaired, with minimal impact on images. Philadelphia: C. Sherman & Son, Printers, 1862. 26 pages. Original printed wraps. 24 x 15 cm. Multiple chips to the wraps, not affecting printed matter; spine worn and split for 3 cm at top and 6 cm at base, but wraps holding well. Wraps also show a few creases, toning, and several small spots. Small chip to base of gutter of title page and to upper corner of the same; other corners slightly worn; a few marginal creases and minuscule edge tears. Excepting a minor spot on the final page, the text is clean. Good only. FIRST EDITION. Charles Ingersoll was a former Pennsylvania Congressman who had long been critical of abolitionism. His "Letter to a Friend in a Slave State," published in 1862, criticized the Union war effort and called for compromise and reconciliation with the South. In this pamphlet, Russell argues against Ingersoll and insists that the country will only be reunified after the military defeat of the Confederacy. Minor soiling to cloth, faint erasure to front free endpaper, lightly penciled name on the title page that should be virtually undetectable if erased (we will do so at the buyer's request). The jacket has shallow chips at the ends of the spine panel, not affecting lettering, a small stain to the spine panel extending onto the rear panel, and a clean split to the top and bottom thirds of the fold where the front panel and front flap meet (the flap is holding well at the center of the fold and jacket is now mylar protected). Fine in very good dust jacket. Jacket shows sun-fading to the spine panel, a slight crease to the base of the spine panel, and some faint rubbing. FIRST EDITION. SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR on the front free endpaper. Established in 1891 as a women's college focused on teacher training, the school became co-educational and was given its present name in 1963. The author, Allen W. Trelease (d. 2011), was a professor of history at UNC-G and the chair of the history department (1984-1992).

New York: Harper & Brothers, 1914. 345, [1] pages. Original blue cloth lettered in gold with small color illustration mounted on front cover. [19.2 cm.] Very good plus in like dust jacket. Light foxing to plates and facing pages. Spine panel of jacket a little sunned and with light wear to ends, small tear to rear panel. Still an attractive copy. Oval cutout on front panel of jacket reveals mounted plate on cover of book (as issued). Early printing, issued the same year as the first. [Date code indicates September, 1914; another copy found with the code for July, 1914.] Complete with frontispiece and three plates by William van Dresser. Author's second book. Basis for the 1939 film, "Bad Little Angel," starring Virginia Weidler. Margaret Turnbull (1872-1942), a Scottish immigrant to the U.S., was a novelist and screenwriter. She wrote or provided the scenarios for over fifty films from the 1910's to the 1930's.
