Description:
London: Macmillan, 1885. First Thus. Finely bound by Bumpus in full morocco ornately stamped in gilt to spine and boards. All edges brightly gilt. Inner dentelles gilt. Marbled endpapers. Measuring 150 x 95mm. Slight sunning to spine and bumps to corners, else a tight, bright binding. Preliminary and terminal leaves foxed, with remainder of textblock fresh and unmarked. A pleasing copy. Selected and annotated by Palgrave, the present selection was dedicated by the editor to Emily Lady Tennyson; and the lyrics he chooses are clearly governed by a desire to emphasize feminine beauty and goodness, as well as marital and filial love. To the Queen, A Dream of Fair Women, The May Queen, The Grandmother, and The Miller's Daughter are only a few examples of the lovely lyrics drawn together here. Beautifully bound in striking red morocco.

Description:
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1904. The Kensington Edition. Near Fine. Thirty-two octavo volumes (8 9/16 x 5 5/8 inches; 217 x 143 mm.). A Near Fine set, handsomely bound in contemporary three-quarter red morocco, ruled in gilt, over pink mottled paper boards. Frontispieces, plates, and text illustrations, after the originals. Spines decoratively tooled and lettered in gilt in compartments, top edge gilt, others uncut. Two volumes with small nicks or rubbing to the crowns, otherwise the leather is intact and without any cracking at the joints.   "In beginning with the four great novels the edition follows the logical tradition of the first complete and revised edition published after Thackeray's death; an attempt at a strict chronological succession, which would give precedence to minor works, would confuse the reader and has only pedantic arguments in its favor. In general, the order followed is that of the edition referred to (that of 1869); but some slight variations have been made,… Read More

Description:
London: Smith, Elder & Co, 1857. First edition. Original pebbled publisher's cloth binding stamped in gilt and blind. Yellow endpapers. Measuring 195 x 125mm and collating complete with half title to volume I: [8], 329, [1]; [4], 304; [4], 301, [1]. A Near Fine copy, with the front hinges cracked but holding on volumes II-III and minor tanning and foxing to preliminary and terminal leaves of the same. Occasional instances of rough opening causing chips or closed tears at margins not affecting text. Overall a clean and pleasing example. "The last completed novel of William Makepeace Thackeray, The Adventures of Philip tells the story of Philip Firmin, a blustering but good hearted young man. When his mother dies, Philip becomes heir to a fortune but is estranged from his father, who proceeds to waste his son's inheritance on fraudulent speculation" (University of Michigan). The loss of his money leads to his dashed ambitions in marriage, and his resulting rage costs him his career as a journalist.… Read More

Description:
London: Hodder & Stoughton, 1913. Fine. Original publisher's pictorial vellum with gilt to spine and front board. Pictorial endpapers. Boards slightly bowed and lacking silk ties. Some offsetting to endpapers and occasional light foxing not affecting illustrations. Number 38 of 350 copies signed by the illustrator, and complete with twenty mounted color plates with titled tissue-guards. Considered by its author to be a novel without a hero, Vanity Fair follows the path of the social climbing Becky Sharp as she seeks to improve her position within the Victorian social strata. One of literature's most important early iterations of the female anti-hero, Miss Sharp helped to expose the truth that women were not merely domesticated angels but could be just as ambitious and driven as their male counterparts; and her foil Amelia reveals that even an apparent paragon of femininity was imperfect. A contemporary reviewer noted "Thakeray's theory of characterization proceeds generally on the assumtion that… Read More

Description:
New York: Simon & Schuster, 1959. First edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. A Near Fine book in like dust jacket. Book with a small bump to the lower board and the spine a bit rolled. In a Near Fine dust jacket with a few professionally repaired tears. Inscribed by the author: "For Jane with love Kay Thompson and me Eloise Dadada." A pleasing copy of this children's classic, which finds the intrepid Eloise away from the Plaza Hotel on an international adventure. Eloise and Nanny discover that "not everyone in Moscow is a diplomat" and a host of other revelations, such as the "rawther deep" voices of Russian pigeons. This title in the Eloise series was published in 1959 at the height of the Cold War when tensions between the USSR and USA were outright hostile and the threat of mutually assured destruction reassured no one. Eloise brings her disarming candor to Moscow where despite her admission that "I could tell you a lot but I am only 6," we do in fact learn and laugh with this precocious 6 year old.… Read More

Description:
Boston: Ticknor and Fields, 1866. First edition. Very Good +. Bound in publisher's original green cloth, stamped in blind on the front board and gilt titles on the spine. BAL 20117. One of 1546 copies. A Very Good+ copy with a few short tears to the cloth at the crown and a pencil owner's name and address on the rear end paper. An excellent copy internally. After Henry David Thoreau's 1862 death, the Boston publishers Ticknor and Fields, who had published Walden, gathered together and published a collection of Thoreau's essays. The majority of the essays in A Yankee in Canada outline Thoreau's commitment to social reform, especially Thoreau's abolitionist work. Slavery in Massachusetts as well as A Plea for Captain John Brown appear here. But the most famous and influential of Thoreau's essays included in this title is Civil Disobedience. This landmark essay was previously published with the title Resistance to Civil Government in Elizabeth Peabody's Aesthetic Papers, but it appears in the present… Read More

Description:
New York: Leypoldt & Holt, 1867. First English language edition. Very Good. Translated from the Russian by Eugene Schuyler. This copy Very Good or a little better with blue boards mottled and small loss to the cloth at the lower spine. Internally the book is tight, with uncracked hinges and page block, pencil bookseller notations on end papers and light to moderate foxing throughout, as is common. Originally published in Russia in 1862, this book remains the author's most important literary contribution. It tracks the growing divide between generations of Russians who adopt western theories first of liberalism then nihilism. As with many other works of this period, it also follows the emotional growth and love interests of parallel characters. Its influence can be felt in later works by Tolstoy and Dostoevsky as well as numerous western authors. Along with Gogol's "Dead Souls," this work is considered one of the earliest modern Russian novels. Very Good.

Recounting the adventures of Huckleberry Finn as he flees his own abusive father and aids Jim in his escape from slavery, Twain's novel has been praised for its "distinctly American voice," putting at its center two common people who find an uncommon friendship. "Today perhaps the novel's greatest significance lies in its conception of childhood, as a time of risk, discovery, and adventure. Boston: James R. Osgood & Co, 1882. First US edition. Very Good +. Preceded by the UK and Canadian editions. BAL Binding state "A" with the two blanks at the end used as the end paper and paste-down. With the correct Franklin Press imprint on the copyright and the three misprints uncorrected: "estate" (p. 124), "do not" (p. 263), and "reigned" (p. 362). A Very Good+ copy with some fraying and wear at the spine ends and with a charming Christmas gift inscription dated 1881 on the front end paper. Set in the Tudor palace of Henry VIII, Twain's first attempt at historical fiction used the doppelganger motif to explore what might happen if Prince Edward and a pauper named Tom Canty were switched into each other's lives.
