First edition of this important and handsomely illustrated work on Japanese-style wood-carved motifs and patterns which stem from the "Tachikawa [or Tatekawa] Ryu" school of design, decoration, and building techniques. Tachikawa (active 1763-71), a master carpenter who lived in Tokyo, focused on the taisha-zukuri (or oyashiro-zukuri), which is the oldest Shinto shrine style. The handsome woodcuts depict a series of small motifs and larger designs for carvings on pillars, rafters, gables, and other structural elements of a shrine or house. The Taiheiki [Chronicle of Great Peace] is a historical epic written in the late 14th century that covers the period of war within Japan from 1319 to 1367 between the Northern and Southern courts. It is part of the genre known as gunki or kassen monogatari, tales of epic wars between two parties. A popular story, it was recycled and re-worked in later centuries, mostly as a parody of current events and problems or as a basis for fictional stories. The Shijo School of Cooking was established by professional chefs during the Muromachi period (ca. 1400-1550). These chefs specialized in preparing formal banquets for nobility. The text is a compilation of techniques and recipes taken from earlier noteworthy cookbooks of this school. There are details on cutting and slicing, the meanings of the dimensions of the long metal chopsticks, and numerous recipes. The illustrations represent the elaborate seasonal displays of foods, with a particular focus on fish, seafood soups, poultry, and vegetables. Wakayama: Kasedaya Hiemon et al., 1818. First edition of Takebe's translation and commentary of Lorenz Heister's writings on infections and their treatment. Heister (1683-1758), wrote one of the best and most complete works on surgery of the 18th century. Translated into Japanese, it was enormously successful, introducing Western methods to many Japanese surgeons. Takebe (1782-1842), a samurai, has included here all of Heister's writings on infections and has provided a number of his own cases histories. A number of pharmaceutical recipes are described including aloe (the plant is illustrated on two pages). Methods of lancing are illustrated along with a number of Western surgical instruments. Osaka, Kyoto, & Tokyo: Kawachiya kihei 河內屋喜兵衛 et al., 1793. Second edition (1st ed.: 1787) of this collection of three medical works passed down in the Takeda family of physicians. The book is very rare; we find no copy in North America in WorldCat. The first of the three works, "Magical Method for Investigating the Pulse" 察脈神訣, is ascribed here to Liu Kai 劉開 of the Yuan era, with explanations attributed to Xiong Jun 熊均 of the Ming dynasty. "From the discussions of the many pulses by the former worthies, this book excerpted the four of the shallow, deep, slow, and numerous, and distinguished them clearly. First edition in Japanese, translated from an unidentified French text, which, according to the Preface, was issued in 1863, with a sequel in 1867. Tanabe also states that this work includes information gained from the French military mission of 17 men (four officers, ten non-commissioned officers, and two soldiers, led by staff captain Charles Sulpice Jules Chanoine), who came to Japan in early 1867 at the request of the Japanese Shogunate for training in Western warfare. Several of these men became deeply involved in Japanese politics, unsuccessfully fighting on the side of the Shogunate. First edition, a variant issue with a three-page second preface at end and no addenda (our copy agrees with a copy at Kyoto University). Tang was a physician who lived and practiced near Suzhou, a major market for the trade in ginseng. His Ren Shen Kao (Ch.), here in the first edition published in Japan, is a practical guide to the medicinal uses of ginseng and gives valuable insights into the massive trade in ginseng during the 18th-century Qing dynasty. Upon reading History of the Jin, compiled in 1345 under the leadership of the Mongol scholar-official Toγtaγa (1314-56), Tang began in 1804 to narrate the events from the history of that state in verse form. He decided to have a selection of the poems printed in 1813, toward the end of his life. They were reprinted in 1873 in the present work. The poems were annotated by Tang's sons Xianye and Xian'gan and proofread by several dozens of Tang's former students. Tang Yuntai was from Qingpu, which is today within the Shanghai city limits. This novel, a real "tearjerker," is one of the masterpieces about the Yoshiwara pleasure quarters (see Cecilia Segawa Seigle, Yoshiwara: The Glittering World of the Japanese Courtesan, p. 141). The novel was a blockbuster of its time, focusing on the irreconcilability of romantic love and societal norms (see J. Scott Miller's review of Jonathan E. Ten erotic cards, issued together, each in the tanzaku ban format, and accompanied by their original color-printed wrapper. Tanzaku cards were popular in the Meiji era (1868-1912); see Rosina Buckland's "Erotic Art of the Meiji Era (1868-1912)" in Timothy Clark et al., eds., Shunga. Sex and Pleasure in Japanese Art (British Museum: 2013), pp. 454-55. The upper panel of each is very finely color-printed with saturated inks, embossing, and rich use of metallic pigments, revealing the Japanese printer's art at its best. The "twenty-two histories" of the title refer to the so-called dynastic or standard histories (zhengshi 正史), a retrospective bibliographical category encompassing books written between the early first century CE and the Mingshi 明史 [History of the Ming] from the 18th century. Both the scope and the format of the histories made them inaccessible to readers into the late imperial period, which motivated commercial abridgments such as our book. Manuscript excerpts dating from after 1646, taken from Shuo fu 說郛, a collectanea (congshu 叢書) by Tao Zongyi 陶宗儀 (ca. 1316-ca. 1402), bibliophile and author; Shuo fu preserved a number of important documents and biographical data that would have been lost otherwise. Tao included a number of works - now unique - on Inner Asian dynasties and Southeast Asian kingdoms. This handsome manuscript, prepared for presentation to Emperor Francis I (1708-65), Holy Roman Emperor and Grand Duke of Tuscany, is a beautifully written contemporary fair copy of the original holograph manuscript now in the Museo Galileo (formerly the Institute and Museum of the History of Science in Florence), compiled by Targioni-Tozzetti (1712-83), the great natural historian, librarian, director of Florence's botanical garden, and professor of botany. He was, after Spallanzani, the most active Italian naturalist of the 18th century. Emperor Francis I, the husband of Maria Theresa, was well-known for his interests in the natural sciences and for assisting his wife in running the complicated Austrian dominions. The collections of natural history specimens in the "Specola" next to the Pitti Palace trace their origins to earlier Medicis and to Georg Eberhard Rumpf, who had sold a large collection of 360 shells to Cosimo III de' Medici in 1682. This is very attractive work of designs for storefronts and specialized doors, issued by the leading publishers of architectural works of Britain, the Taylor's Architectural Library. The Taylors, father and son, were shrewd businessmen and gave priority to the practical manuals required to support the building boom of the late eighteenth century. Bound-in at end is a two leaf folio catalogue of the Taylor's publications (this seems to be ESTC T80563), dated after 1795. Good copy of a very rare book, preserved in a box. ❧ ODNB.
