His is the best known analysis of English literature from a French philosophical point of view.

First edition of one of Reverend Thacher's sermons delivered in Boston. Thacher (1756–1812) was a prominent preacher in Massachusetts, and many of his sermons were printed during his career. This sermon begins with a verse from Luke Ch. 12 and proceeds to discuss the themes of philanthropy and charity. The sermon fits with the mission of the audience. A group of Bostonians established the Humane Society in 1786 in order to find ways to prevent water-related deaths such as shipwrecks and drownings, an unfortunately common occurrence. They are largely responsible for introducing life-saving methods including lifeboats and rescue techniques to Massachusetts Bay. Clark label affixed over the original imprint.

First edition of the second of four anthologies under this title (the others being published in 1836, 1841 and 1850). Thatcher (1809-1840), although a lawyer like his father (who was also a representative to Congress from Massachusetts), devoted himself to literature, contributing several articles to journals critiquing American poets. Here he includes original works of poetry and literature by Edward Everett, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Richard Dana, John Greenleaf Whittier, Charles Sprague, Francis Wayland, John Quincy Adams, Daniel Webster, and his own work, among many others. Holmes contributed three poems including "Our Yankee Girls", "Old Ironsides" and "The Comet."

Includes speeches by several of the former presidents of the College, including Dr. James Cornelius Wilson as well as one by Mitchell's cousin and friend Owen Wister.

Thomas (1854-1904) was an American physician who practiced in Baltimore. He was also the author of several historical works on Quakers as well as a work of poetry entitled Echoes and Pictures. Boston: Lee and Shepard, 1864. FIRST EDITION. Wood engraved frontispiece and 3 additional full-page plates. Publisher's cloth, worn and rubbed, spine with title in gilt faded; interior good. First edition. American novelist William H. Thomes' (1824-1895) debut adventure novel follows a California man who goes to Australia in search of gold. An entertaining and dramatic account of life on the frontier of Australia, this work did a great deal to promote the public misconceptions of Australia as a land of dangerous aborigines, a population the majority of which consists of felons sent from Great Britain, and lots of kangaroos. The author was a member of the Boston publishing house of Elliott & Thomes; this was his first of many adventure novels.

8vo. 506, [6] pp. Original black binding, title in white on spine, first issue jacket with the white border around the photo on the rear panel (jacket slightly worn on the spine); overall in gorgeous condition. Inscribed by the author: "HST Sherry Neth Hotel July 26 '73 Cazart". Also some notations throughout.
First edition, stated first printing on the copyright page. One of Thompson's more colorful books detailing the presidential election of Richard Nixon in 1972. The inscription, from the Sherry Netherland Hotel (one of the author's favorites in New York) was most likely made while Thompson was being interviewed by one of the book's first reviewers.

First edition of the first Kelvin lecture given by Thompson on April 30, 1908. Following the death of Lord Kelvin, (1824-1907), the Kelvin Memorial Committee of the Institute of Electrical Engineers (IEE) recommended the establishment of a lecture series to be delivered annually. Thompson was president of the IEE at the time (Kelvin was president on three separate occasions, the third being at the time of his death). Some of the most distinguished British scientists have given the lecture, which is still given annually. Thompson gives a riveting talk on Kelvin's life and accomplishments.The following year, Thompson (1851-1916) published a two-volume biography of Kelvin. Of interest, Thompson himself has a lecture series named after him.

A charming travelogue that describes both familiar and off the beaten path locales in Scotland and England, organized according to the author's original itinerary, which is printed as part of the contents. Includes 6 lovely plates of towns, countryside, and sights. Thomson (1746-1817) began his career a librarian at Dupplin Castle and eventually studied theology at St. Andrews, "but soon displayed tastes and affinities discordant with his office" (DNB). Thomson became a prolific writer who wrote and edited a great number of books and articles including several popular works of history and travel.
