Adelaide: Hunkin, Ellis & King, Printers and Publishers, Pirie Street, 1929. First Edition. Paperback. Very Good. Adelaide, Hunkin, Ellis & King, Printers and Publishers, Pirie Street, [first published 1929; suggested third issue, with minor differences as detailed below]. Octavo, 16 pages with 2 illustrations (from photographs, on pages 6 and 12); the colophon at the foot of the last page states 'Hunkin, Ellis, and King, Ltd., Printers, Pirie Street, Adelaide'. Pale green wrappers with a portrait of the author on the front cover plus text on the inside rear cover ('An Aboriginal Pleads for His Race' by David Unaipon); wrappers foxed and lightly used, with the spine expertly stabilised on the inside; unrelated text written in ink on the blank outside rear cover and in the blank bottom quarter of the last page (quoting Sir Stanton Hicks on soil health); overall, a very good copy. This is claimed - incorrectly - to be the first book by an Aboriginal Australian (see Michael Richards: 'People, Print and…

Description:
[No Place (but probably 'somewhere in South Australia'): Unknown Photographer, 1890. Very Good. [No Place (but probably 'somewhere in South Australia'), Unknown Photographer, circa 1890s]. A gelatin silver photograph (approximately 148 × 205 mm), on the original mount (external dimensions approximately 246 × 304 mm). The photograph is lightly marked and scuffed; the mount is bowed and a little marked, with slight surface loss to silverfish, and minor wear to the corners; overall, in very good condition. The early and varied outfits, the women and children behind the back row, the tussocks in the foreground, and the rustic backdrop - a thatch-roofed corrugated iron and field stone shed - suggest a casual rural environment, but most of the players look like they mean business.

Description:
A hand-coloured albumen paper photograph (133 × 90 mm), mounted on the gilt-edged card of 'Artist & Photographer Otto von Hartitzsch ... 125 Rundle Street, Adelaide'. The South Australian 'Register' (Thursday, 16 November 1882) contains an advertisement for the sale of 'the whole of his superior stock-in-trade ... of his well-known photographic establishment ... in consequence of his relinquishing the profession'. Accordingly, this photograph cannot be later than 1882, but it is probably circa 1880. The young men are in identical uniforms; the only specific clue is the distinctive badge on their forage caps. The extensive hand-colouring obliterates some of the detail, but it is essentially a flag or pennant on a flagpole set within a circle of rope finished off with a square knot. This suggests to us the uniforms are of maritime, if not naval, relevance (and we would not be surprised to learn that the men were foreign visitors to Adelaide).

Description:
One item is quarto; one is 260 × 140 mm; the others are octavo (nine of them are single-paged - five of which have conjugate blanks - and the others each contain two to four pages of text). The most interesting items are leaflets for the Annual Literary Competition in 1885 (one page), 1888 (2 pages, 260 × 140 mm), and 1889 (4 pages, with one page announcing the sixth annual competition and another page devoted to reading clubs). The other items are notices of meetings (some with agendas), an 1888 questionnaire sent to member societies, and an unused SALSU prize plate (100 × 80 mm) mounted on a blank page of the only duplicate item in the group. George Hussey was general secretary for the entire period. The 1885 item above has a chipped, creased and torn blank bottom margin, and the 1888 item above is creased and folded, with some (mainly marginal) splits along two folds; overall the condition is very good or better. Nothing if not rare, and there is enough wheat among the chaff to get the literary…

A gilt-edged card (77 × 115 mm), printed in red, with manuscript insertions; in excellent condition. The invitation, issued to 'Mr R Burton' and initialled 'DGE' [D.G. Evan] is undated, but the English footballers arrived in Adelaide on 5 July 1888. The South Australian 'Weekly Chronicle', on Saturday 14 July 1888, under the headline 'International Football', has an account of the first match played the previous Saturday. 'The English football team initiated their series of matches on the Adelaide Oval [last] Saturday, when they met the South Adelaides. The venture of bringing to the colonies more than half a score of British players was a bold one, perhaps the boldest that Mr Lillywhite and his associates had yet undertaken. Not only were the expenses of the tour nearly twice as great as those incurred in bringing out a team of cricketers, but they had also to risk the possibility of the game, as played by the visitors, not taking the popular fancy. The very great difference between the Rugby and…

Adelaide: Hunkin, Ellis & King, General Printers, 1911. First Edition. Paperback. Adelaide, Hunkin, Ellis & King, General Printers, [1911]. Tall octavo, [108] pages with numerous advertisements (many with illustrations) plus 12 plates (mainly portraits). Purple wrappers saddle-stapled to colour pictorial card covers, with advertisements printed on all surfaces of both the wrappers and card covers; the edges of the wrappers have been expertly conserved, but the poor-quality stock is heavily mottled, and the gilt-printed outer surfaces are now competing with the black-printed inner surfaces which are bleeding through; for the rest, apart from a trifling production flaw (a temoin - an untrimmed dog-ear - to one leaf), the deluxe programme itself is in very fine condition.
