Antonio de Ulloa and Jorge Juan, two prominent Spanish naval officers, embarked on journey to South America, where they eventually settled exploring from Ecuador to Peru. During this time of exploration, they discovered the metallic element platinum. This journey led them to becoming two of the most important European scientists of the early 18th-century.
They published an account of their expedition, a work that was met with immediate popularity – translated from the original Spanish into English and other European languages. 'A Voyage to South-America' is one of the best Spanish accounts of gold and silver mining in the 18th-century. 1824 1ed GAMBLING Fatal Effects William Weare Thurtell Murder Trial Law Macabre

"They cut his throat from ear to ear,
His head they battered in.
His name was Mr William Weare,
He lived in Lyons Inn."

This fascinating, illustrated work describes the notorious trial of the gruesome murder of Mr. William Weare. On October 24, 1823, following a gambling dispute, John Thurtell and his two accomplices Joseph Hunt and William Probert apprehended and brutally murdered Weare. The culprits would later be discovered and arrested, consequently both the murder and subsequent trial famously exposed the criminal underworld of London to a curious and ignorant public audience causing enormous public interest and media coverage. The latter portion of this work entitled, 'The Gambler's Scourge' offers intriguing commentary regarding the dangerous practices and consequences of gambling.

A rare, 18th-century Japanese woodblock print of 'Nendaiki Esho." "Nendaiki Esho" is a historical chronology of Japan from which most of the setsuyoshu were based. It blends legend and history presenting the first emperors and the mythical beginnings of gods and the earth as historical facts. This "Nendaiki Esho" was the primary means by which the commoners learned about the gods of Japan rather than the Nihon Shoki or the Kojiki and was an important part of curriculum in Japanese school until 1945.
This rare 1746 historical narrative contains events such as the separation of the heavens and the earth, the hero Hasubi on his way to Korea, the divine winds that hindered Mongolian fleets from invading Japan, the last Volcanic eruption of Mt. Description:
1868 Japanese Ishikawa Goemon Ninja Samurai Color Illustrated Robin Hood Japan

A rare, 19th-century Japanese woodblock print of "Ishikawa Goemon Ichidaiki, " or "The Life of Ishikawa Goemon,". It tells the folk story of Ishikawa Goemon, a legendary ninja thief who lived during the late 16th century in Japan. Goemon is said to have been a Robin Hood-like figure, stealing from the wealthy and giving to the poor. The book is historical fiction, notable for its colorful descriptions of Goemon's exploits and has been adapted into numerous stage plays, films, and other media. Goemon's famous death scene of being boiled alive after attempting to assassinate Hideyoshi the feudal lord for the death of his wife contains conflicting accounts, with some saying he held his son aloft while he boiled alive and his son was forgiven of his father's crimes, and others saying that he plunged his son into the bottom to kill him quickly and then held him aloft to force them to face their atrocity.

1696 Japanese Woodblock Chinese History Tsuzoku kanso gundan Qing Han War CHINA
A 17th century Sino-Japanese woodblock print history of the Chu-Han Contention between the Qing and Han Dynasty bound in the fukurotoji style. The Tsuzoku kanso gundan is the tale of the conflict between the chu and han after the Qing Dynasty before Liu Bang united China in 202 BC as the emperor of the Han Dynasty. It was translated into Japanese and in turn helped shape Japanese literature away from the stylized Chinese verse of scholarly attention and began considering the more mundane, as literature as well. This was done by entertaining and educating the natives of Japan about the world, specifically China, who were banned from leaving the mainland during that time period. Pastreich writes,
"Such Chinese historical novels may have appealed to Japanese readers because they covered the details of Chinese history in a lively and accessible manner, going beyond the digested and sanitized description of history to the… Read More
