In full: "Dear Bridges, You have a 'lovely' collection of poets in your den. Is it asking too much to request to make room for this vellum?" Based on the content, this is likely an endpaper removed from a book.

Fine 7-1/4" x 9-1/2" gelatin silver photographic portrait by Carl Van Vechten of the author of THE YEARLING and CROSS CREEK in a regal pose wearing a fur coat. With Van Vechten's blindstamp in the lower right corner and ink stamp on the verso. Additionally in Van Vechten's hand on the verso is Rawlings's name, the date, and his identification code.

Paris, 1 August 1895. Framed Letter. About Fine and a handsome presentation. One-page SIGNED handwritten letter in French on 4-1/2" x 6-3/4" sheet to an unnamed politician regarding placement of an article about his book in REVUE ENCYCLOPÉDIQUE. Roughly translated: "I received your check for 4 guineas today and I thank you. The article on your book is at the REVUE ENCYCLOPÉDIQUE, a very important magazine which comes out about the 15th. As soon as the magazine will be printed, I'll send it to you myself. Let me congratulate you on your electoral victory although I take hardly any interest in politics." Matted and framed along with a reproduced image of Georges Rouault’s portrait of Verlaine. Associated with the Symbolist and Decadent movements, Verlaine's poetry was admired and recognized as ground-breaking, serving as a source of inspiration to composers including Gabriel Fauré and Claude Debussy. He died in 1896 at the age of 51 after being ravaged by drug dependence and alcoholism.

Prang & Company issued a series of "Doll" books in 1863 which, along with other juveniles, toy books, and games, were among its first publications. Katherine McLinton in THE CHROMOLITHOGRAPHS OF LOUIS PRANG notes: "The tiny Doll books are some of the most interesting and fascinating items Prang published."
