Description:
Copper engraved, double page, map, hand colored, cartouche uncolored, 49 x 59 cm (19 1/2" x 23"). Some minor soiling and aging; otherwise very good and quite colorful. Valk (1651-1726) was born in Amsterdam, and was also known as Valck. He was a fairly well known engraver and publisher, and would eventually go into partnership with Peter Schenk (1655-1718), and would produce an atlas and maps together. In fact, it seems they brought the property of the Blaeu firm, which gave them material for their maps. This is a very attractive map of Britain, and includes an inset of Orkney, Shetland and Faro islands. The map also contains a large cartouche that depicts angels and Poseidon. Bagrow p. 276.

Description:
Small 8vo original cloth, illustrated, 339, [60 ]pp. Binding scuffed a little, with some minor wear to extremities. Top hinge a little weak, but still reasonably solid, and normal aging. Very good overall. The book is illustrated with six color lithographs showing the different races. Written shortly after the Civil War, this work is pretty direct in terms of its racist views of white supremacy. Van Erie argues that the natural state of Blacks is in slavery, and efforts to change that would result in misery for all. He goes on to indicate that the North’s misguided efforts to impose it’s will on the South with respect to the Negro was forcing Southerners "to a fate more horrible than death itself!"

4 pp. including stampless address leaf. To her husband, John Van Lew, Richmond, Virginia. Wear at folds, a few fold tears with no loss of text, a margin tear, but not much loss, some aging, very busy letter, but very legible; good overall. In St. Augustine, Eliza Van Lew (1798-1875) met a variety of local residents, from Spanish Cuban grandees of the Arredondo family, which had received some 300,000 acres of Florida land by royal grant, to the free African-American who drove her and her baby around town.Elizabeth Van Lew (1818-1900) was 15 years old when her mother Eliza took her ailing year-old brother to winter in Florida (Florida was still a territory when this letter was written) for his health. Elizabeth was sent to live with Abolitionist relatives while attending school in Pennsylvania. She wholeheartedly embraced her Abolitionist heritage. At the beginning of the Civil War, she brought together a hodgepodge of pro-Union sympathizers, from slaves to slaveholders, to secretly convey valuable… Read More

Description:
8vo, pamphlet, illustrated. Some soling to paper covers, small chip to lower extremity, one page slightly torn, contents clean; overall very good. This is probably a privately printed report on the historical development and financial condition of the various rail lines in San Francisco. The author provides discussion on the Geary Street, Potrero Ave., and Union Street rail lines. Martin reports a profit of $216, 541.25 for the year ending December 31, 1914. He seems to suggest that San Francisco is a pioneer in terms of municipal ownership of rapid transit lines, and that they have been very successful at it.

Pamphlet, 8vo, removed, dbd, but restitched, 24 pp. Likely former New York Library copy, stamp on one page, some very minor foxing; very good overall. Curious political campaign pamphlet for the presidential election of 1856. While the tract was intended to be pro Buchanan, by today's standards it seems more pro Fremont. A good portion of the pamphlet links Fremont, from a variety of sources, to the abolitionist cause. Sabin 23955
