Publisher's green cloth with gilt lettering and vignette of soldiers on front board. Former mercantile library copy, with bookplate on front pastedown and a few stamps. No external library markings. Corners lightly bumped, some chipping/short tears to cloth at spine ends. One of the folding maps is quite delicate and has numerous tears (partially mended on the verso with archival tape), with some minor loss. Vandeleur, a highly decorated officer in the Scots Guards, participated in the Unyoro Expedition in 1895, the Niger Expedition in 1897, and served with the Egyptian Army in the Soudan expedition of 1898. Vesey's year was occupied with directing efforts to identify the best grasses to grow for forage in different parts of the country. He notes the establishment of experimental stations in Texas and Kansas to investigate grasses for arid conditions, and another in Mississippi to study grasses suitable for cultivation in the South. Light shelf wear to wrappers; very light dampstaining (1/2" or less in height) to the bottom corner of first 20 pages; else clean and sound. "The Suez campaign of November 1956 will long remain one of the world's great mysteries. Many clues were missing. Others were blurred or twisted." This study focuses on Verity's uncovering of the aforementioned clues and a breakdown of the politics surrounding the Suez campaign (the invasion of Egypt by Israel, Britain and France in 1956).

Two quarto volumes bound in later quarter leather and brown buckram, with red and black spine labels. One-inch split to front joint at head of Vol. I, some scuffing to the spines. Volume 1 lacks frontis portrait, shadow from removal of bookplate on each front pastedown, otherwise complete and clean, bindings sound. Ownership signature of John Griffiths in each volume, dated 1738 in Volume II. Vernon (1654-1721) was a Whig politician and a "leading practitioner in chancery cases" (ODNB). Washington: Smithsonian Institution, 1914. Hardcover. Very good. Part 1: 408 pp, indexed; Part 2: 110 plates, each with brief explanatory text. Original green cloth stamped in gilt. Both volumes have some faint evidence of liquid splash on boards, but still present well and are in excellent condition internally. Some pages unopened in text volume. During the summer of 1899, the party cruised the waters off southeastern and southern Alaska and the eastern Aleutians, making numerous stops for scientific investigation and collecting. The starfishes collected during the expedition were all sent to Verrill, a highly accomplished invertebrate zoologist.

McCutchan was sent as a missionary to the Congo Free State in 1897, where he was soon outraged by the treatment of the natives he observed. He became one of the most vocal opponents of King Leopold's regime.
