1841 Thomas Paine 1ed Life of American Revolution Politics George Washington

"Whatever is my right as a man is also the right of another."
– Thomas Paine, Rights of Man

Thomas Paine's political activism in the late 18th-century was vitally important to many of the successes of the American Revolution. He was responsible for some of the most important propaganda pamphlets at the start of the war which inspired American rebels in 1776. 'Common Sense' alone is considered the all-time best American pamphlet, in fact, John Adams is known to have said "without the pen of the author of 'Common sense,' the sword of Washington would have been raised in vain.'

Author Gilbert Vale wrote a biographical sketch on the life and political influence of Thomas Paine. Published simply under the title "Life of Thomas Paine", this book contains commentary on his writings as well as his correspondence with George Washington. This book also contains references to other Paine biographies including Sherwin and… Read More

1800 1ed Vancouver Voyage to North Pacific Canada Alaska Illustrated French

Rare first edition on the most important voyage of the North Pacific!

In 1791, Royal Navy officer George Vancouver set out on an expedition to North America's Pacific Northwest, exploring western Canada, Alaska, and parts of Northwest United States. The specifics of this voyage were published at the turn of the century, both in English and French, and is often considered to be the most accurate account of the Pacific Northwest. This 1800 first French edition includes impressive full-page views of Vancouver's discoveries, including an impressive engraving of Mount Rainier. Perhaps Cowan's perspective is the most telling:
"This work is superior to any of its kind, and constitutes the chiefest source of authority of that period."

According to Howes, of all modern expeditions to the Pacific, Vancouver's is one of the most important. In this work Vancouver also describes Alaskan and Canadian natives, nautical and astronomical… Read More

1688 1st ed History of Louis XII King of France Naples Italian WARS Varillas 3v

First edition of Antoine Varillas' History of Louis XII. A well-recognized member of his community, Varillas was a histographer and librarian for the Royal Library in France. Upon retiring, Varillas dedicated himself to writing a complete history of the life and reign of King Louis XII of France, for whom little was written at the time. Unfortunately, his writings received little recognition. As a result, his scholarly reputation was negatively impacted. Initially having high hopes, his works failed to reach the status he had desired during his lifetime. It was not until much later that the public would show interest in his writings.

Antoine Varillas was a French historiographer who is remembered for his numerous historical accounts of European royals and noble families. Perhaps his most important book was his 'Anecdotes of Florence', a history of the secrets of the House of Medici and their influence in Florence.
This 1685 first edition of Varillas is bound with a 1707 printing of Bernard de Fontenelle's "History of Oracles". First published in 1687, this book was written with significant controversy focusing primarily on the supernatural abilities of oracles both before and after the birth of Jesus.
