Description:
Rome: appresso Francesco Zanetti, 1584. FIRST ITALIAN EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. Later "carta rustica" boards with spine in early vellum. The text begins on A2. Complete. The extremely rare first Italian edition of this report from India. Streit lists a Latin edition at Goa in 1584 (Streit IV, 1024) but this appears to have been published only in later collections (the 'Littera annua' of 1585, etc.). This is the first of two separately printed 1584 editions, both of which are of extreme rarity, recorded by Streit. The Yale copy also lacks the first blank leaf. This letter details the deaths of the Jesuit Martyrs of Cuncolim, who were killed on Monday, 25 July 1583, in the village of Cuncolim in the district of Salsette, territory of Goa, India. The "martyrs" were the Italian Rudolph Acquaviva, the Spaniard Alphonso Pacheco, the Swiss Peter Berno, the Portuguese Anthony Francis, and Brother Francis Aranha, also a Portuguese. In addition, the Portuguese layman Gonçalo Rodrigues, and some Indian… Read More

Description:
Bologna: Presso gli heredi di Euangelista Dozza, 1647. THIRD EDITION (1st ed. 1550) and the SECOND ILLUSTRATED EDITION (1st 1568) of Vasari's "Lives". Hardcover. Fine. Bound in three uniform bindings of contemporary stiff vellum, somewhat soiled. The text is in overall fine condition, with some light browning, occasional foxing, and a few marginal damp-stains. The three volumes are illustrated throughout with the well-known woodcut portraits of the artists set within ornate frames. For this edition the editor, Carlo Monalessi, acquired the original woodblocks used for the 1568 edition, and had several new portraits added. All three volumes feature an added engraved frontispiece by Bloemaert after a drawing by the celebrated Roman painter and engraver, Giovanni Angelo Canini (1617-1666). "Giorgio Vasari invented Renaissance art. In 1550, he published a collection of one hundred and forty-two biographies, his 'Lives of the Most Excellent Italian Architects, Painters, and Sculptors from Cimabue to our… Read More

Description:
Rome: Presso Lazzarini, 1792. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. Printed on blue paper. In contemporary mottled calf, the spine and boards tooled in gold. A very fine copy of the very rare first catalogue of the Museo Pio-Clementino - founded by Pope Clement XIV in 1771 and greatly expanded his successor by Pius VI-, written for the use of visitors by the keeper of the museum, Pasquale Massi of Cesena. Rare. The Museo Pio-Clementino was the first major curatorial museum within what are known today collectively as the Vatican Museums. In 1771, Pope Clement XIV had Michelangelo Simonetti adapt the Belvedere Pavilion to accommodate the papal collection of ancient art. When Clement's successor, the avid art collector Pius VI, was elevated to the pontificate in 1775, the pace of acquisition increased dramatically and very soon the collections outgrew the rooms arranged for them by Simonetti. In 1776, Pius VI called for a radical restructuring of the existing museum and the construction of new, grand spaces… Read More

Description:
London: Printed for Jacob Tonson, 1697. FIRST EDITION. Hardcover. Fine. An exceptional, and exceptionally large, "large paper" copy. This copy is complete with the engraved frontispiece, the extra plate depicting Vergil reading the Aeneid to Augustus, and all 101 of the magnificent engraved plates by W. Hollar called for in this edition: ten in the Bucolics, twenty in the Georgics, and seventy-one in the Aeneid. Bound in 17th-century paneled calf, very nicely rebacked in the 18th-century. The spine is separated into eight compartments, ruled and tooled in gold, by raised bands. There are two spine labels, one in red and one in green morocco, tooled in gold. The boards are framed by a single gold fillet. Internally, this copy is in superb condition with very little of the browning associated with this edition. The great majority of leaves are crisp, lily-white and wide margined. In fact, this is the largest, and cleanest copy that we have had the pleasure to handle. There are a few incidental… Read More
