Contemporary Spanish painter Manolo Valdés (b. 1942) began his career in the 1960s as one of the founding members of Equipo Cronica, a group of artists that utilised aspects of American Pop Art in their form of protest art against the dictatorship of General Franco in Spain. The group were also inspired by the way Pop Art challenged the traditional history of art and what it constituted, leading Valdes to appropriate images from across art history to explore in his own body of work. Here, Valdés re-imagines the sitter from Fra Filippo Lippi's painting Portrait of a Woman with a Man at a Casement (c. 1440). The Vale Press edition of this fifteenth-century poem, generally attributed to James I of Scotland, recounting his capture at the hands of the English in 1406 on his way to France, and his subsequent imprisonment by various Henrys. They were both antiquarians and avid collectors. Salt had earlier finished his training with the topographical draughtsman and diarist, Joseph Farington, and Valentia appointed him to be his official artist and secretary for the tour. Hand-painted acrylic on wood three-dimensional multiple, 1990, signed in ink, from the edition of 175, 7 After the ground-breaking relief wall-sculptures of the late 1960's, Vasarely moved away for a time from three-dimensional surfaces to the flat surfaces of canvas and paper. In the late 1980's he returned to three-dimensional works. As a part of this renewed interest he created a number free-standing geometrical form sculptures with stencil-painted surfaces in kinetic patterning. The combination of the pattern of the colours and the overall geometric form was very influential on the development of this type of geometric abstraction.His interest in kinematics, optical illusions and playing with perception through a vibrant combination of colours is clear in Tsillag, where Vasarely's accumulation of experience in different artistic mediums and schools culminated in the production of some of his finest sculptures in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
