Boston: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1985. Original promotional poster for the Caldecott Medal winning children's book The Polar Express, signed by the illustrator/author Chris Van Allsburg. The poster measures 18 inches by 36 inches. All over the internet are Polar Express posters featuring the train that is illustrated on the book's dust jacket. Seldom seen is the poster that promoted the book before it won the Caldecott--a poster that features Santa and his reindeer rather than the train. Even more rare is one of those posters signed by Chris Van Allsburg. Part III is a hardcover portfolio case containing the eight (8) folding RICA [Research in Campanian Archaeology] maps of the ancient city of Pompeii, printed on Polyart paper by Aziende Tipolitografiche Eredi Dott. G. Bardi in December 1984. Part III-A, published in 1986, is a profusely illustrated hardcover book explaining the maps of the Insulae of Regions I-IV of Pompeii. The limited edition of Vandiver's classic biography of Stonewall Jackson is one volume in the Easton Press "Leather-Bound Library of The Civil War" series. Beautifully bound in 22 kt. gilt- decorated dark blue leather (and lighter blue accents) with raised bands on spine; all-edges gilt; silk moire endpapers; frontispiece in color. Laid in is a sheet of the Collector's Notes. The book is in very good++ condition: clean, tight, and bright, with a small scratch in the gilding on top edge of textblock, which has left a tiny nick on the top edges of 3 pages; one small rubbed spot on gilding of bottom edge of textblock. Chicago: Esquire, Inc., 1944. Peruvian-American airbrush artist Alberto Vargas (1896-1982) was "discovered" by Florenz Ziegfeld in 1919 and for the next 12 years established himself as a preeminent pin-up artist while painting pictures of women in the Ziegfeld Follies.  After a few years working for movie studios in Hollywood, in 1939 Vargas was hired by  Esquire magazine to replace George Petty.  A condition of his employment was that his pin-up art for Esquire would be published under the name "Varga," a name that the Magazine trademarked.  During the next five years the pin-up calendars that Vargas produced for Esquire were a tremendous success--so much so that when the artist left the magazine, Esquire successfully sued to prevent him from using the trademarked name in future work.  That is the reason that all his more explicit work for Playboy Magazine was signed with his full name, "Vargas." Paris: Vaugondy, 1778. The image is 9 3/8 inches by 11 inches on a folded sheet measuring 11 1/4 inches by 16 3/8 inches. Original hand-colored in outline map of the German Empire by Didier Robert de Vaugondy (circa 1723-1786). He and his father Gilles Robert de Vaugondy were the premier French cartographers of the 18th century. This map was published circa 1778 in Vaugondy's Atlas Portatif. The map is guaranteed to be more than 240 years old. It is in about very good condition: clean and bright, withjust s few small spots of foxing; edges of paper are tanning well away from the image; binding edge is rough.. First Edition Thus.
