This book 'consists of a detailed study of two of the 'Eclogues', 1 and 7, which Pöschl considers to be of particular importance and to contain the essence of Virgilian bucolic. He first takes his readers through the first Eclogue with a running commentary, then in a second chapter discusses the various Virgilian, and classical, qualities illustrated in the poem; the final chapter is devoted to Ecl. 7. In the second chapter he makes interesting use of the analogy with art and architecture, and draws on the work of Wölfflin and other art historians in an attempt to define 'die lateinische Klassik'.
