Description:
Léon Vanier, Paris., 1886. First edition. Octavo. 224 pages. Recent binding of quarter vellum with marbled boards, leather spine label; front and rear original wrappers bound in. Prose musings, often autobiographical in character. The book was published at the time of Verlaine's lowest ebb when he was living in utter poverty. Its title, with the required Symbolist obliquity, carries echoes of the death of the poet's mother and the remarriage of his wife Mathilde, both of which took place in 1886. Rimbaud, of course, had been out of the picture for at least ten years. Some light foxing. Very good indeed.
