Paris: Editions de la Nouvelle Revue Française, 1922.

An uncommon luxury edition of the first publication on the artist's career, written by critic and art historian Robert Rey (1888-1964). This is one of 215 numbered copies on pur fil Lafuma, supplemented with an original wood-engraved portrait of Valadon (1865-1938) by Georges Aubert bound-in at the beginning. Valadon began as a model for Puvis de Chavannes, Renoir, Forain, Toulouse-Lautrec, etc., and became a full-time painter in 1896. She was the first woman admitted to the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts and showed at a number of important exhibitions. Description:
Illus. throughout. 219 pp. & colophon. 4to, pictorial softcover. Prague: National Gallery Prague, 2018. The rare English edition of this amply illustrated monograph on Valoch (b. 1946). The book comprehensively details his substantial contributions to Czech art from the 60s to 80s, as well as the formation of his important archive of Eastern European avant-garde art. From p. 11: "Valoch and his activities in the artistic realm may serve as the basis for the evaluation of the development of Czech, Slovak, and partially also European art scene from the middle of the 1960s. Analyzing Valoch's activities will gradually unveil a system created by a very active artist and curator, we might call it networking in current terms... "Valoch's work as an artist was inseparably connected with his activities as a curator and theoretician from the beginning of his active presence in the artistic world. The following characterization generally applies to Valoch as an artist as well as a poet, curator, critic,… Read More

Description:
13 black & white illus. 77 pp. Small 8vo (175 x 126 mm.), orig. pictorial wrappers, staple-bound. [Philadelphia: 1973]. The landmark exhibition catalogue for a pioneering show of artists' books. It was held at both Moore College of Art, Philadelphia, and the University Art Museum, Berkeley. Vanderlip, later a museum curator at the Denver Art Museum, writes in the Foreword: "This exhibition attempts to survey the many different types of books made by artists from 1960 to the present. For the purpose of this Exhibition the definition of 'book' is very flexible. If the artist conceived his work as a book, I have generally accepted his position." This is followed by the essays "Slices of Silence, Parcels of Time: The Book as a Portable Sculpture" by artist Lynn Lester Hershman (b. 1941) and "Some Thoughts on Books as Art" by the poet and critic John Perreault (1937-2015). The exhibition presented the works of Ader, Baldessari, the Bechers, A.A. Bronson, Byars, Cage, Dibbets, Downsbrough, Feldmann,… Read More

Title within typographical border. 2 p.l., 32 pp. Small 4to, modern morocco (first two leaves carefully remargined in gutter, light browning), uncut. London: T. Fawcet, 1642. First edition of a very rare and important book; this work, written in 1637 or 1638 but not published until 1642, details for the first time Vermuyden's plan to drain the Great Level, a significant portion of the Fens between the Nene River and the uplands of Norfolk, which was successfully completed by 1653. His plan extended over land in six counties and involved 11,000 laborers (mostly Scottish and Dutch prisoners of war) in the project. It was one of the greatest land reclamation projects ever realized. Vermuyden (1590-1677), a civil engineer who specialized in drainage, came from a Dutch family which specialized in that activity. Several black & white illus. Title-leaf, 27 pp. & two additional text leaves. Square 4to, printed folder & inner black folded sheet, loose as issued. La Plata, Argentina: Diagonal Cero, 1970. A most compelling association copy linking two important Latin-American artists; the author Vigo (1927-97) has inscribed the recto of the title-leaf to Carrión (1941-89). This contains an illustrated historical essay on visual poetry, with depictions of work by Alvaro de Sá, Julien Blaine, Wlademir Dias-Pino, Lara Lemos, Moacy Cirne, Neide Sá, Jean-Claude Moineau, Grupo "Zaj," Jochen Gerz, Vigo, etc. Several texts by European artists are translated into Spanish. A very good copy, from the library of Ulises Carrión; some faint and inoffensive staining to a few leaves and minor wear to the folder and black folded sheet. Two full-page engraved plates on one double-page sheet, two woodcut plates, & numerous woodcut diagrams in the text. Woodcut of Medici arms on titles which are printed in red & black. Two parts in one vol. 8 p.l., 154 pp.; 2 p.l., 154 pp., one leaf of errata. Folio, cont. vellum over boards (a bit of foxing). Florence: J. Cocchini, 1659. First edition and a splendid copy of the author's first book in which Viviani attempted a reconstruction of the important fifth book of Apollonius' Conics, a text at that time lost. The Conics was in eight books, but only the first four have come down to us in the original Greek. There was some knowledge of the fifth book due to hints supplied by other Greek mathematicians and it was this information which Viviani used. While Viviani was working on his reconstruction of the fifth book, Borelli discovered in an Arabic manuscript in the Medicean Library the text of books five through seven (book eight is lost). These were then translated into… Read More

Description:
One fine folding engraved plate. [16] leaves. Small 4to, modern wrappers (minor browning). Hamburg: G. Rebenlein, [1681]. First edition of this scarce observation of the famous comet of 1680-81. Apart from its brightness, this comet is notable as the first to be observed using a telescope (by Gottfried Kirch in Coburg). Other well-known observers included Robert Hooke, Flamsteed, Newton, and John Evelyn. Voigt (1613-91) was a mathematician, astronomer, and writer of calendars. He studied mathematics at Erfurt and taught at Stade, near Hamburg. He observed the comets of 1664, 1665, and 1677. In this work, he provides a very detailed description of the appearance of the comet, its path, and significance. The fine folding plate depicts the comet's path through the constellations. Fine copy and scarce. ❧ Kronk, Cometography, I, pp. 369-73.
