Vermont (centered around Rutland). 1950s. Some of the drawings are dated -- 1951 or 1953, and we are confident that the vast majority which are undated hail from that decade as well. With 98 separate works of art, 31 of which are watercolors or predominantly so, one is color pencil, the balance being pencil drawings. In two of the albums all the illustrations, per our count, are full page and done directly upon the leaves, while in the third album, the one which also contains the most watercolors (27 of them) and the greatest variety of subject matter, the drawings are mounted onto the leaves mostly, and often two per page. All three albums are spirals, two of which open in an oblong fashion, one with the spiral on the top, and they measure 30.5 by 22.5 cm. Each century is represented with a folding card that houses a leporello containing 16 color fashion plates of costumes from that century. The folder contains brief descriptions of each card. Thus there are four folders and four leporells, with a total of 64 fashion plates. In addition there is an oblong brochure, also in leporello form (with four leaves) which provides a broader overview of the four centuries of fashion history. All this is housed in a box whose overall appearance (without consideration for condition) is of an earlier era. Each fashion plate is 5.5 by 4 inches, or 14 by 10 cm, and these are in fine condition, as are the folders within which they belong. The only condition issue of this very scarce and attractive set is of the box, which has chipping along the edges of the decorative paper that was pasted to the boards, and two edges, one of the lid, the other of the inner box, have been replaced so as to restore… Read More

Gothic type with text of full libretto, and every page with Gothic decoration evocative of opera's time and place, plus wonderful illustrations interspersed. Interior tight and clean. Leather has some wear.

Cloth. Very Good. Small folio, 33 by 25 cm. 38 pp. of pen and crayon drawings, most of which are both erotic and comical, mounted in "Henschel's Skizzenbuch". The accompanying text, often narrative poems, is written by Wagniez as well. The French-Belgian artist Paul Wagniez (1876 - 1935) studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts et des Arts Decoratifs in Paris and became known for book illustration. He was a versatile artist, nonetheless, at home with still lifes, landscapes, portraits, and action scenes such as those of the hunt, and equally proficient in oils, watercolors and other media. Most of the works contained in the album are from the early 1930s, shortly before Wagniez's death, and these were dedicated to a friend, Robert Villefumade, who most surely compiled this album in honor of Wagniez. Fine. 12 page brochure, plus two large folded sheets with brightly colored illustrations of three different plans and a large outer envelope with illustrations conveying an idea of the contents. Plans are based on the drawings of C.D. Wagstaff, who it is asserted was one of the foremost landscape architects in America at the time. N.d., circa 1930s. N.p., but surely Chicago, where Swift was based. Brochure is 12mo, 18 by 14 cm, envelope is 31.5 by 24 cm, two sided posters, with the plans and designs rendered in color, each 61 by 42 cm. Two of the plans are for comparatively modest suburban homes, one a bungalow, the other, a tidy cottage, and one plan is for a decidedly more upscale residence of a house of eclectic design, with elements of both Colonial Revival and Mediterannean styles. Very interesting and entertaining survey of who were or might not have been the basis for characters throughout literature. Sometimes quite witty also. Tight, clean. DJ has some edge wear and small close tears along it but still VG.

Near Fine. 8vo. 19.5 by 12 cm. xxxvi, 432 pp. 12 plates, all but one hand-colored, and ten of these can really be counted as two plates, with a top plate with a peek-a-boo window on an overlay leaf, allowing an underlying head to serve two contrasting costumes or modes of dress. The frontis plate is mounted onto a leaf with a restored corner -- the corner had neatly snapped off. Slight dryness to spine, and a few minor rub spots on the edge of the binding. Otherwise, clean, tight copy.

Unusually bright, handsome copy of this work of Swedish genre art, with each painting telling a story that epitomizes an aspect of Swedish life and culture at the time. Folio, 38.5 by 26 cm. 17 double paged chromolithographic color plates, with long descriptions of each provided on two folding sheets following the particular plate. The descriptions are in given in Swedish, French, German and English, with a large fold-out page containing three columns given over to a description in one of the languages. Subjects include timber-floating, offerings in a country church, hay-making, a wedding dance, flax-dressing, bear hunting, home weaving, grindstone making, young militia men, a servant's fair, etc. Wallander (1821-1888) was also known for portrait and historical paintings. An exceptionally clean and bright copy of this juvenile audience plate book depicting geography and domestic and work life. N.d., circa 1870s. Small folio. 32 by 21.5 cm. [5], 7, [1] pp followed by 30 double-sided hand-colored plates. Each plate measures 32 by 40 cm. The plates depict the home, rural and urban, the city, the farm, a vineyard, tools, a church interior, a city market, a winter skating scene, a mountain landscape, a railroad station, a forest, etc. The point was to educate children about the features of all these places and spaces, and incidentally impart the vocabulary -- the many nouns -- associated with them. Nowadays the plates are simply wonderfully decorative, with their bright chromolithography and evocation of a lost world. And the great Meggendorfer was responsible for three of the plates! Tarrytown, NY: Bartlett Orr Press (Privately printed), 1921. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good. Folio. 36 by 26 cm. 135 pp. 54 photographic plates, 16 of which are in color. (The porcelain and jewelry specimens are mostly done in color.) Among the arts treated in this lavish book are pottery and procelain, jades and crystals, bronzes, and stone sculpture. Chinese specimens dominate, followed by Japanese, then Korean. The collector, Worcester Reed Warner (1846-1929), was a trained mechanical engineer, astronomer, entrepreneur and business executive, and a philanthropist. The company he co-founded, Warner & Swazey, manufactured machine tools, but was best known for making astonomical telescopes. The cover is moderately soiled but still handsome with its centerpiece gilt Chinese symbol. Within the book is clean and tight.

Harrisburg: E. K. Meyers, 1890. Second Edition. Half Calf. Very Good. 8vo. xiv, 434 pp. With 100 plates, all but one with color. This second edition is much enlarged and has twice as many plates as the first. Plates based on Audobon. Contemporary calf is heavily worn and very dry, with rubbing and cracks abounding. Redeeming this copy are the clean plates. One text leaf with small marginal crease and tiny closed tear. Otherwise text age toned but clean as well.

Promotional and souvenir brochure for silent movie swashbuckling vehicle for Fairbanks! 4to. 30.5 by 23 cm. 16 pp., plus wraps. Besides Fairbanks, the movie starred Billie Dove and Donald Crisp, among others. Full of photos in addition to bios, synpopsis, facts about the movie's making, etc.

1790. Framed. Good. Mary Watkinson, a student at Mrs. Clarke's School, created this small-ish sampler in 1790. In addition to the typical alphabet, here all caps, and numbers, here 1 to 16, the sampler has a few short homilies, such as j"Be thankfull for a friendly reproof" and "Spend your time well". The sampler, we think, is quite accomplished for a seven year old. It measure, in sight, 25.5 by 23 cm, and with the frame, 30 by 28 cm. We assume the sampler is American, but we can't be 100 percent certain of this, and we haven't been able to identify the Mrs. Clarke's School. The fabric has a few holes, with some minor loss of the lettering, and a film of soiling, yet it remains decoratively appealing as is.
