It was published during the American Centennial, and illustrates some estates in a probably less known town in New Jersey. Founded in the early 18th century Closter is still a relatively small town in Bergen County.

This is a rather scarce map from a scarce atlas (Atlas of Bergen County New Jersey 1776-1876). It was published during the American Centennial, and illustrates the different school districts and estates in Saddle River. Part of the map is designated as East Passaic, and it features the streets and lots in that area. The Passaic River is also prominently featured. Will require extra postage.

While New Barbadoes Township is the primary title on the map, Midland Township is captioned on the right side of the map too. Will require extra postage.

Elephant folio, leather spine and tips, gilt title on top cover, illustrated with 54 plates and maps. Hinges a little tender, but still pretty firm spine frayed, and partially detached at bottom, edgewear, paper a bit browned and toned, endpaper torn. Overall very good. The atlas provides maps and charts on all sorts of statistics from the nine censuses, taken in 1870. This includes occupations of people, race, literacy, population density, political divisions, age and sex, and religious affiliation. Much of this material is illustrated in maps and charts. While some copies are said to include 60 plates and or maps, this copy has 54. The number is consistent with the number presented in the index. Rather scarce item, the OCLC locates few copies. 16mo, leather, engraved title, [16], 558 pp. Partially disbound, with some signatures loose or separated from text block, some earlier tape repairs, engraved title also repaired, a couple of paper labels on spine, binding worn and chipped, joints split, missing endpapers, library label on front pastedown, contents somewhat aged and browned, and somewhat brittle, title page chipped at edges, and a bit browned, last leaf has small tear on top, with no loss, and bent from tape repairs. There were several editions of this work published, and the first seems to have been in 1655. Pagination varies, but this copy appears to be complete. A four page dedication in Latin is included with this copy. The dedication and preface first pages have woodcut borders and letters. The last page is "An Index of the Heads of the Specimen." OCLC.

Pamphlet, 8vo, paper wrappers, 38 pp. Some wear and chips to wrappers, and edges, normal aging and toning; otherwise very good.A classic Indian captivity first published in Philadelphia in 1784; there were several later editions, the last in 1904. Gilbert and his family were captured on April 25, 1780, and taken all the way to Canada. A party of eleven Seneca Indians, who invaded the Pennsylvania frontier where the Gilbert homestead was located, took them. But not before their homes were plundered and torched. They did not return until September 1782. The Gilberts were a very well known family, especially among the Quakers of eastern Pennsylvania, and their captivity attracted wide attention. The narrative is based on an account given verbally by Gilbert to Walton. Sabin 27348, Field 608, Streeter III 1655. Church 1203. Ayer 303.

This work contains significant and historically important government reports from the first year of the Civil War. The Civil War material includes the cost for funding the Union Army ($27 million), deployment of the Merrimack, concerns about Missouri pulling out of the Union, and the efficiency of a volunteer army. Also includes reports on conducting the 8th census, public works expenditures from 1789-1860, the condition and treatment of the Indians, and participation in the London Industrial Exposition I 1862.

Printed broadside, text in two columns, 9x11 1/2.A little browned, a few marginal nicks and short tears, tape repairs on verso; else very good. The platforms of the National Union Ticket, supporting Lincoln for President, and Andrew Johnson for Vice President, is juxtaposed with that of the Democartic Party, supporting George B. McClellan for President. According to the commentary, the Union Platform wants to defeat the South through force of arms, and end slavery. It seems that the Democartic Party is silent on the subject of slavery, and is more interested in obtaining peace now.

Pamphlet removed 94[1] pp. Some foxing, especially title page. This pamphlet provides a glimpse of the Confederate States making ready for war. Through resolutions and acts outlined here, they establish many of the functions they will need as a sovereign state. Including, setting up a post office, taxes, and raising an army. Newspaper, folio, folded, 4 pp. Some chips and folds at edges, creasing at folds, slight foxing, less than normal aging; otherwise in very good condition. Much better than average paper from this period. This issue of The Chicago Times includes an article that starts on the front page about the capture of Savannah. Another front-page article covers Sherman's march through Georgia.

One folded sheet, two pages of text, illustrated red and blue lettersheet depicting George B. McClellan, with slogan , "WE HAVE BEAT OUR LAST RETREAT," includes matching postally canceled envelope. Minor folds, one small hole at center fold, not affecting text, normal aging and toning. Overall in very good condition. James Rikert, who enlisted in 1861, was discharged in 1862 for disability. He joined as a 21 year old private at Fort Wayne, Michigan, and mustered into Company G of the MI 5th Infantry. He sent this letter to Celia Gibson as a follow-up to a letter he sent a week earlier concerning their march on Manassas. He reports heavy rains that postponed the march, but expects to march the next day. While he mentions his sadness at the loss of his grandmother, he makes a point of telling Celia this could be his last letter. Three leaves, two 8 x10 sheets, and one 5x10, text on all sides, and comes with typed transcripts. Normal aging and browning, and a few tears at folds. The letters were written by George Roden who was born in 1841 from Newark, New Jersey, who was the son of English immigrants, and served in the 2nd New Jersey Infantry regiment. He was a corporal at the time these letters were written. The letters talk about the desolation of the Virginia countryside. "Not a fence or a decent house is to be seen for miles… the black remains of Camp fires with the filth of the many camps of both armies are seen on most every farm. I tell you, Va. is suffering for her folly." The letters are from Alexandria and Stafford Court House, Virginia. See guide to Roden family papers at the William L. Clements Library.
