The fictional Blinkey Ben dispenses his folksy, small town, suggestive observations to the "Sporting Editor," and the "Night Editor" while using local scenery, and a few local celebrities to philosophize about the good old days.

First Edition, very good condition, 18 pages, original stitched wrappers, with stab marks along the spine, and minor chipping to edges; not affecting contents which are intact and clean; Wm. C. Hamilton was a "Southern Union man." He opposed secession, and slavery; he eventually became Governor of Texas.His letter to Lincoln, dated July 28, 1863 shortly after Gettysburg, supports the Emancipation Proclamation. He proclaims slavery an enemy of the nation, and states that former slaves are " ... capable of being made allies in the common cause of freedom, justice, and humanity."

Brick red cloth boards with embossed device of a covered wagon on the front cover. 100 pages illustrated with black and white historic photographs, index, Indian vocabulary, bibliography. Very good condition (previous owner's neat inscription and date on first fly leaf).

At the time of the California Gold Rush, shortly after the end of the Mexican War, in September 1849, Whipple and the man assigned to guard him, Cave Couts, were assigned to survey the new international boundary line in the vicinity of the Gila and Colorado rivers; as required by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.

According to E. I. Edwards, who wrote the introduction, notes, and bibliography: "Of all the early accounts written by the emigrants of the gold trail who crossed our Southern California desert, none can claim quite the same degree of distinction that attaches to the Whipple Report .... "

The Colt volume, published in 1974, is bound in blue leatherette, with the title in silver on the front cover over the rampant Colt trademark; the Winchester volume, published in 1975, is bound in red leatherette, with the title in silver over the Winchester horse and rider trademark.
