Description:
85-93 with cited references. Quarto (10" x 7") bound in original publisher's wrappers. American Antiquity Volume 42, number 4 complete issue. First edition. An interdisciplinary approach to Late Classic Maya polychrome-painted ceramics from Buenavista del Cayo and Cahal Pech, Belize allows for preliminary observations relevant to a better understanding of elite pottery production and use in the western Belize Valley. The combination of typological and contextual data from archaeological investigations of ceramics along with art-historical stylistic analyses and ceramic-paste chemical-composition data identifies ordinary and special-purpose vessels excavated from palace-midden contexts as having been created in the same elite-oriented or "palace" workshop(s) at Buenavista del Cayo. The method allows for the identification of unslipped, monochrome, and polychrome pottery excavated from "palace" contexts at nearby Cahal Pech as products of the "palace" school workshop(s) at Buenavista del Cayo, which… Read More

xiv+190 pages with figures, charts, maps and appendices. Small quarto (10 1/2" x 7 3/4") bound in original publisher's green wrappers. Middle American Research Institute Publication number 43. First edition. The 1969-71 National Geographic society-Tulane University project was organized specifically to deal with two problems. The first concerned the precise definition of the Rio Bec architectural style and its proper chronological placement. The second involved the determination of the chronological and cultural relationships existing among the Rio Bec, Chenes and Puuc sub-regions. Several secondary results were expected as well. These included the construction of an independent chronological framework for the Rio Bec zone; the establishment of a firm chronological and typological bridge between the isolated culture sequences of northwestern Yucatan and the southern Maya lowlands; and the dating of the massive defensive network at Becan, suspected to be of either Late or Terminal Classic age. First edition. Two objective quantitative models for estimating maximum human population densities are reviewed and modifications of the published baseline data estimates are presented. One of these models (Pmax(2) is applied to data for hunter-gatherer groups in central Desert of Baja California and the results are compared with population size and density estimates from independent sources. Predicated population sizes duplicate those derived from independent sources for the region as a whole and match well with those for separate mission areas. Description:
442-467 pages with bibliography. Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 6") bound in original publisher's wrappers. Journal of Anthropological Research Volume 34, Number 3 complete issue. First edition. The "time-out" conception of drunken comportment (MacAndrew and Edgerton 1969), which holds that intoxication allows drunken individuals to avoid the social sanctions that are normally applied to untoward behavior, is critically examined in relation to the drinking patterns of the "everyday" Indians of Sioux City, Iowa. The time-out view is found to be inappropriate because offended individuals do negatively sanction drunken norm violators. It is argued that by stressing the possibility of a society viewing alcohol as a producer of moral incompetency MacAndrew and Edgerton underplay the extent to which intoxication helps to establish "boundary markers" or "framing cues" for a variety of situations within a single society. Condition: Spine sunned, Light edge wear else very good.

Description:
xxiv+383 pages with frontispiece, plates, maps, glossary, bibliography and index. Royal octavo (9" x 6") bound in original publisher's red cloth with silver lettering to spine. From the library of George M Foster. First edition. This community study of an Andean peasant village is noteworthy not only for its competence as a descriptive monograph but also for its theoretical and practical applications. Stein's vivid description of these Peruvian Indians is ample evidence of his skill in field techniques and his humane sensitivity. His interpretations of his data are guided by a comprehensive body of theory that incorporates concepts of society, culture and personality. Most unusual in the report of a professional anthropologist of human potentialities from community development through social action. George McClelland Foster, Jr born in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, on October 9, 1913, died on May 18, 2006, at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California, Berkeley, where he… Read More

22 typescript pages. Quarto (10 1/4" x 6 1/4") bound in original publisher's wrappers. All 45 games with notes from the Premier tournament. (Betts: 25-224) First edition. The 29th Hastings Christmas Chess Festival was held at the end of the year 1953. After resuming annual tournaments in 1945 after the war, the chess club at 7 Carlisle Parade had struggled to keep the event ongoing without many foreign participants to make the contests more engaging to the public. This edition of the premier tournament saw an opportunity that would shape the course of the event for the remainder of the 1950s. The Soviet Chess Federation, in the interest of displaying their dominant grandmasters to the West, sent as emissaries David Bronstein and Alexander Tolush to participate in the festival. They were met by four time Hastings winner Dr. Savielly Tartakower, and Conel Hugh O'Donel Alexander who had won the 22nd edition of the Hastings event and been a code-breaker for the Allies during WWII. The remaining seats were… Read More

33 pages with diagrams, tables and index. Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's pictorial wrappers. (Lusis: 1773) First edition. The 45th USSR Championship was held at Leningrad, November 28 - December 22, 1977. The following players finished up just in time to spend Christmas with their families: Lev Alburt; Vladimir Bagirov; Yuri Balashov; Iossif Davidovich Dorfman; Efim Geller; Karen Ashotovich Grigorian; Boris Gulko; Alexander Kochyev; Gennadi Kuzmin; Tigran Vartanovich Petrosian; Lev Polugaevsky; Oleg Romanishin; Vasily Smyslov; Evgeni Ellinovich Sveshnikov; Mikhail Tal; Vladimir Borisovich Tukmakov. Well, maybe it wasn't Christmas, but it was a time of peace as two-thirds of the games were drawn, a USSR Championship record. Perhaps it comes as no surprise that Petrosian found his way to the lead. However, a loss in round 8 allowed Gulko to first catch him, then take the lead with a win over Smyslov in round 9. At this point both players went into draw mode, spliting point after… Read More

Matthias Wahls's "Modernes Skandinavisch 1" was a huge success when it was published in Germany in 1997. Wahls's book contributed to the growing popularity of the Scandinavian (or Center Counter-) Defence as a solid weapon. The Scandinavian is especially practical for black players who don't want to learn too much theory and who don't want to be dependent on White's choices. The original edition of The Modern Scandinavian has acquired cult status among chess aficionados. Some have even confessed to have learned German in order to be able to read it! His first publication, a pamphlet of twenty-four pages, on New Variations in the Muzio Gambit (1831), was followed in less than a year by his New Treatise, which gradually supplanted the chess Studiesof Peter Pratt (1803, &c.) and the far from thorough Treatise by J.
