Description:
SIGNED by David Foster Wallace on the Title Page. Original color pictorial wrappers. A long out-of-print First Edition copy, seldom encountered signed. Signed first edition of this early scholarly consideration of rap, and Wallace's book immediately preceding his epic Infinite Jest. Uncommon in the first edition (it was reissued in 2013, by Back Bay Books sans the original subtitle, following Wallace's death), it is scarce signed. And while the rear cover erroneously proclaims the book "the first serious consideration of rap" (both Steven Hager and David Topp beat them to that distinction), it remains an early, if largely academic, interrogation of hip-hop. Book #Cv2354. $3500. We specialize in Rare Ayn Rand, history, and science.

Description:
SIGNED by Walt Whitman in commemoration of his 70th birthday. Intended for Whitman's private distribution and Banned by American bookshops and libraries for its explicit sexual imagery. One of only 300 copies of Whitman's 70 birthday edition of Leaves of Grass, Whitman s literary masterpiece, "America's second Declaration of Independence" (PMM, 342). With six portraits of Whitman, including the famous original mounted frontispiece photograph with a butterfly resting on his finger. Whitman s explanatory note is printed on the title page: "Today, after finishing my 70th year, the fancy comes for celebrating it by a special complete, final utterance, in one handy volume of L. of G. with their Annex, and Backward Glance-and for stamping and sprinkling all with portraits and facial photos, such as they actually were, taken from life, different stages. Doubtless, anyhow, the volume is more a Person than a book. And for testimony to all (and good measure) I here with pen and ink append my name." Text and… Read More

Description:
SIGNED First Edition, one of only 5000 first printing copies of this high spot of twentieth century drama. With The Glass Menagerie, Williams set out to create a new kind of "Plastic Theatre," a highly expressionistic language of the stage to replace what he saw as the stale conventions of realism. In theatrical terms, Williams's approach has been called Brechtian: It uses devices meant to create what the German playwright and dramaturge, Bertolt Brecht, (Threepenny Opera, Mother Courage and Her Children), called the "alienation effect." Williams succeeded, thereby revolutionizing American theater. Within two weeks of opening on Broadway in 1945, the play won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best American Play, catapulting Williams to fame. In the words of the citation, the award was offered "To Tennessee Williams for his play 'The Glass Menagerie' and its sensitive understanding of four troubled human beings" (New York Times).8vo. Description:
SIGNED by Tenessee Williams (no personalization) on the front flyleaf, a highly collectible first edition copy, one of only 5080 copies, of his Pulitzer Prize winning drama of faded, promiscuous Blanche DuBois vs her brutally sexy brother-in-law, Stanley Kowalski, still celebrated 75 years after its Broadway opening as one of the finest achievements in the American theatre. A highspot of theatre and cinema, Streetcar launched the careers of Marlon Brando, Jessica Tandy, Kim Hunter and Karl Malden, and solidified the position of Tennessee Williams as one of the most important young playwrights of his generation, as well as that of Elia Kazan as the greatest American stage director of the '40s and '50s. Of his Broadway performance in Streetcar, Brando remarked: "What I remember most about a Streetcar Named Desire was the emotional grind of acting in it six nights and two afternoons a week. Try to imagine what it was like walking on stage at 8:30 every night having to yell, scream, cry, break dishes,… Read More
