Description:
London, Paris & Strassburg, 1832. Hand-coloured lithograph by M. Gauci, printed by Engelmann & Co. Very good condition apart from some overall light soiling. A finely detailed plate from Wallich's 'Plantae Asiaticae Rariores', a rare scholarly work on the most exotic trees and plants from the tropical zone. A renowned Danish physician, botanist, and plant explorer, Nathaniel Wallich travelled to Nepal, Western Hindostan, Ava and Lower Burma in search of exotic flora and fauna and was responsible for introducing numerous Himalayan plant specimens to Europe. Ardently interested in the indigenous plants of India, where he was appointed Superintendent of the East India Company's Botanical Garden at Calcultta in 1817, he began vigorously collecting and cataloguing specimens and helped found the Oriental Museum of the Asiatic Society (later called the Indian Museum in Calcultta). Wallich published Plantae Asiaticae Rariories between 1829 and 1832, which was undertaken with the enthusiastic patronage of… Read More

Description:
London: published by F.J. Sargent, 1810. Hand-coloured aquatint engraving by F.J. Sargent after J. Walmsley, backed onto early card mount. A highly atmospheric and lyrical view of `a place of retirement and peace' (Dorothy Wordsworth) Firmly in the 'picturesque' school of painters, Walmsley here shows an early summer morning on Loch Dochart, in Perthshire, Scotland: two travellers make an early start and the mist is still to be burnt off the waters by the newly risen sun, to the right the ruins of a castle are given a romantic air by the surrounding vegetation and the strongly-shadowed morning light. The Loch lies at the western end of Glen Lochart, a mile to the east of Crianlarich and in the shadow of Ben More.

Description:
London: M & N Hanhart, 1864. Hand-coloured lithograph, heightened by touches of gum arabic. Very good condition. Most likely from Bowler's "Pictorial Album of Cape Town," this plate depicts a scenic view of the St. Andrew Church, otherwise known as "The Scotch Church," on Somerset Road in Cape Town. St. Andrew's was one of the first Presbyterian churches established in Cape Town and one of the first institutions to use natural gas, when in 1842, they installed a small whale-oil gas plant on the premises. A string of gas lamps, a symbol of the town's increasing modernization, are visible along the bustling thoroughfare of Somerset Road. Born in the Vale of Aylesbury, the British landscape painter Thomas William Bowler was one of the most renowned artists working in South Africa during the nineteenth century. After a brief stint as an assistant astronomer in the Cape of Good Hope, Bowler settled in Cape Town, where he established a reputation as a talented artist and drawing teacher. During his life,… Read More

Description:
London: Published by James Ward, No. 6 Newman Street, 1804. Mezzotint. Proof before letters. Possibly state i-vii/ix, Chaloner Smith notes that there are six progress proofs, and one finished proof before inscription in the British Museum. Without comparison it is impossible to note which state this print is. In excellent condition with the exception of some light foxing in the margins. Laid onto contemporary backing sheet with rubbed crease in upper left corner. Image size: 25 1/8 x 16 7/8 inches. In Hoppner's dramatic portrait Lady Heathcote is depicted as Hebe, the goddess of youth. This captivating portrait presents Lady Catherine Sophia Heathcote, the wife of Sir Gilbert Heathcote, in the guise of Hebe, the Greek goddess of youth and spring. In the backdrop, one can spot Ganymede, taking the form of an eagle, who would eventually take over as the cupbearer to the gods. This artistic choice reflects a tradition that was prevalent in portraiture during this era. Posing as historical and mythical… Read More

London: Published by Rudolph Ackermann and Rodwell & Martin and printed by Charles Hullmandell, 1823. Lithograph. State iii/iii. In good condition with the exception of some skillfully rendered repairs in the margins. A striking print of the Duke of Grafton's horse Primrose, by the celebrated animal painter James Ward. This is a marvelous print of the Duke of Grafton's horse Primrose with her foal, from a series of 14 throughbred horses executed by Ward. James Ward was one of the most noted artists of his day, his individual style and superior skill distinguished him from his contemporaries, and his outstanding work influenced the development of British art. Considered to be one of the most important animal painters of his generation, Ward also produced portraits, landscapes, genre and history paintings. He began his career as an engraver, studying under his brother William, who later went on to engrave many of his paintings. London: Published by T. Simpson and Darling & Thompson, 1796. Colour printed mezzotint with added hand colour. In good condition with the exception of a skillfully repaired lower margin. Image size: 17 5/8 x 23 1/4 inches. A lovely colour printed impression of this charming print by Ward after the famous genre painter George Morland. A marvellous Morland depiction of English country life, outside a comfortable pub a poacher has just sold a rabbit to the tavern-keeper. He discusses the rabbit with a patron, who is resting his rifle on his ample legs, while his daughter and several dogs look on. Meanwhile, a most glorious sunset is taking place in the west. George Morland was one of the most successful genre painters of his time, creating, during his industrious career, some of England's most cherished paintings. At an early age Morland displayed his artistic genius, he learned to paint at three and exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy at the mere age of ten. He was a prodigious painter,… Read More

Description:
London: Published by H. Macklin, 1803. Mezzotint. In good condition. A fine impression of this beautiful print by Ward after George Morland, the master of genre painting. "The Hard Bargain" was one of the most successful of William Ward's mezzotints of a Morland painting. Morland's extraordinary ability to convey in posture and expression is perfectly transmitted in Ward's print, in which we see the seller of a heifer making conciliatory gestures toward the prospective buyer, who is already half turned to leave and practically snarls at the seller. The atmosphere is tense, and we have the unpleasant sense that the seller is going to accept the minimal offer. George Morland (1763-1804) was one of the most successful genre painters of his time, creating, during his industrious career, some of England's most cherished paintings. Description:
London: Published by John Raphael Smith, 1785. Mezzotint. A fine image of childhood after Paye who 'especially excelled in painting children, both as single portraits and in groups' (DNB) One odd feature of late 18th century British genre paintings and prints from our present point of view was the discovery of children as suitable subjects of interest. Previously, children rarely appeared in paintings usually as participants in a religious or mythological scene, and not as children per se. Children as they were as opposed to future adults presented a problem for many artists: how to realistically capture childish activities, childish exuberance, childish despair? One of the most successful children artists was R. M. Paye (d. 1821) as demonstrated in this superb snowball fight in which six children each exemplify aspects of childhood experience: fear, joy, capriciousness, pity and so forth. The random arrangement of figures caught in mid-motion, unposed and without self-consciousness enhance the… Read More

London: Published by Henry Morland, 1806. Colour printed mezzotint. In excellent condition apart from some skillfully mended tears. Image size: 17 3/4 x 23 1/2 inches. A lovely colour printed impression of Ward's idyllic print reflecting the English rural ideal, after a painting by George Morland. The term "warrener" refers to someone adept at catching rabbits in their warrens, which the man in this image has clearly done. Bringing home today's sustenance is one element of rural life that Morland worked so prodigiously to demonstrate to his more sophisticated audience. It was a world that grew increasingly foreign to the urbanized world as the 19th century approached. George Morland was one of the most successful genre painters of his time, creating, during his industrious career, some of England's most cherished paintings. At an early age Morland displayed his artistic genius, he learned to paint at three and exhibited his first work at the Royal Academy at the mere age of ten. He was a prodigious… Read More

Description:
London: Published by William Redmore Bigg, 1798. Colour printed mezzotint with additional hand-colouring. In good condition with the exception of some neat repairs to the plate mark. A lovely genre picture after the celebrated artist William Redmore Bigg which demonstrates familial love. In this excellent colour mezzotint, William Ward's fine engraving conveys the charm of Bigg's painting, and illustrates a sensibility and concern for familial warmth that has, to a definite degree, since been lost. Bigg's early Romantic narratives anticipate the "good" people in Dickens' novels for whom familial affection and constancy are ultimate values, unattainable to those in whom personal greed and envy predominates. Bigg has selected his moment well, The fisherman's family has endured hours of imagining and not knowing his fate, listening to the storm rage outside. Now he is safely home and all is well. The family gathers happily but quietly around him, his wife and eldest son help him remove his sea-drenched… Read More

London: Published by William Ward, 1793. Colour printed mezzotint with additional hand-colouring. In good condition with the exception of some small skillfully mended tears in the margins. An early Romantic view of rural life in England after a painting by 18th and 19th century master, James Ward. William Ward (1766-1826) colour mezzotint rendition of his brother James' painting, "Haymakers at Rest" is a superb example of the late 18th century, British genre print, which frequently depicted the lives of "ordinary" rural folk. The subjects in these images tend to be generic types, rather than individuals, and the activities frequently commonplace. There is no moral and barely a story: after having worked hard in the hot sun, the workers relax in the shade, so stunned by their fatigue they hardly speak or interact. The purpose and justification of the image is that it is a picture of "us", of life in the common, (for them) British identity, and the great human commonality we all share. James Ward was… Read More

York: Published by John Wolstenholme, 1821. Colour printed mezzotint with added hand colour. Pencil inscription in lower margin identifies the figures in the print. This is a lovely impression of this lively hunting print showing the moment when the hounds bound through the bracken and break cover. Henry Chalon was an accomplished sporting artist whose skill and imagination attracted Royal patronage throughout his career. He exhibited over 190 works at the Royal Academy and prints after his paintings are widely sought after today. This attractive print beautifully exhibits Chalon's skill as a sporting artist and Ward's genius as an engraver. Ward produced some of the most beautiful prints of the period, and his delicate engravings epitomize the style and sentiment of the age. Ward was primarily a mezzotint engraver but he also worked in stipple, executing hauntingly delicate prints that capture the soul and character of their subject. He studied under John Raphael Smith and quickly became one of his… Read More

Very good condition apart from a mild crease in the lower right of the image. A lovely colour printed impression of this charming print by Ward after the famous genre painter George Morland. Morland pursued his vision of pastoral contentment in many pictures during the 1790's, many of which were superbly engraved by his brother-in-law, William Ward. These took many forms and the emotional idea at the basis of them has lived on into our era. Here, the young couple with four young children share the twilight hour with their pigs, chickens and dog. This end of day re-union of the family was clearly a kind of sacred moment for Morland, a kind of non-sectarian, rural vespers. George Morland was one of the most successful genre painters of his time, creating, during his industrious career, some of England's most cherished paintings. At an early age Morland… Read More
