Description:
Bristol: Thoemmes, 1994. First Thus. . Soft cover. Very Good. First edition thus. Paperback. 21.5 × 13.5cm, xix + 292pp. In his later years, William Morris became an active and respected lecturer and writer on social and cultural themes, the successor to Carlyle and Ruskin. He published two volumes of these writings in his lifetime, Hopes and Fears for Art in 1882, and Signs of Change in 1888. Since it was in 1883 that he committed himself to Socialism, these two volumes read together show clearly the development of his political-cultural thinking. All the lectures deal, in clear and vigorous English, with issues of work, ecology and society that are still of central concern today. The text is reproduced from May Morris' Collected Works of William Morris (1914/1915). Condition: This copy is in very good condition.

In the turbulent times of the post-World War One era, new political parties emerged frequently in Germany, many with opposing extremist policies. The Communist movement grew out of the Socialist working classes using the Russian Bolshevik Party as a template. In direct opposition, the new National Socialist German Workers Party under the leadership of Adolf Hitler, occupied the extreme right-wing position. Head on conflict was inevitable and both parties organised violent demonstrations against the other. Hitler recognised that he was physically vulnerable and ordered the formation of his own protection squad, made up of loyal men who would not shirk from a fight. From the…

Hardback in dustwrapper. 25.5 × 17.5cm, 864pp (576 pages of text and over 660 photographs on 288 pages). Outside of the Nazi hierarchy, Odilo Globocnik is almost certainly the most culpable in the planned and almost successfully executed attempt to annihilate all the Jews of Europe. In producing this book, the author was soon to discover several interesting facets to the history of this unsavory character. Not only did he play a leading role in the process of murdering the Jews, he was also the arch highwayman in the plunder of their possessions. Additionally, he was responsible for the compulsory uprooting of thousands of Polish non-Jewish citizens, the destruction of their communities, and the trafficking of enforced slave laborers. Often justifiably vilified for his crooked dealings as Gauleiter of Vienna, his function as asset stripper of the Polish Jews is overshadowed by his…
