Description:
New Preston, CT: Bernhardt Wall, 1926. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. In his introduction to this book, Wall explains that he had purchase an old two-volume set of The Spectator at a secondhand bookstore when he was a child. The tale printed here was a favorite of young Bernhardt. It is (supposedly) Addison's translation of a story about a man who, as a joke, was wrapped up like a mummy and then placed in bed between two beautiful naked women who teased him all night long. Wall's illustrations for the story are cartoonish, not unlike the work for many of his postcards. But there are two other etchings near the front of the book of an entirely different character, dark, and moody. In one, a ghostly figure kneels on a grave and in another, a man tortured after death, tries to catch a fish in his teeth while his arms are restrained. Wall also includes portraits of Addison and Plato in this volume. Published in an edition of 150 copies, this is number 10. 21 etched leaves, including eight text…

London: Macmillan and Co, 1933. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. A collection of sixteen short stories, including "the classic werewolf story 'Tarnhelm'; the oft-anthologized 'The Little Ghost'; 'The Snow', a chilling story of vengeance from beyond the grave; and perhaps the highlight of the collection, 'The Silver Mask', which one critic has called 'a masterpiece, a classic example of how a tale can be truly terrible and ghostly with no ghost and only the wispiest hint of the supernatural.'"-quoted from the current Valancourt Books edition. ix, [1], 369, [1], 2 pages. First edition (first printing with 1933 date on title page and no later printings on copyright page). A very good copy (slight spine lean) in a very good dust jacket priced at 7/6 net. Description:
Washington, DC: U.S. Government Printing Office, 1946. First Edition. Trade paperback. Very good. The final report on the relocation, internment, and incarceration of Japanese immigrants and of Japanese Americans following the Japanese Navy's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. While the book's chronology begins in January 1942, the chapter called "The Price of Prejudice" notes that the FBI reported on December 11 that more than 1200 Japanese aliens had already been arrested. This report, like many of the post-War publications by the staff of the War Relocation Authority, is critical of the decision to intern the Japanese and is sympathetic to the hardships Japanese and Japanese Americans faced. The book also covers the little-remembered activities of the Farm Security Administration and the Federal Reserve Bank, which was responsible for internees' property. xvi, 212 pages. Illustrated with halftone photographs. First edition (first printing). A very good copy in the original printed wrappers.

Description:
New York: Equinox, 1933. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. One of 920 copies of this wordless short story printed from the original wood blocks (i.e., a series of 30 original prints by Lynd Ward). As with all of Ward's 1930s work, this belongs with other social realist novels of the period. The story follows a sculptor carving the nude likeness of his lost love in stone. He sets out to find her, is caught up in police violence against protestors (a common Ward theme), and eventually finds her in a flophouse, passed out, naked, and surrounded by liquor bottles. He leaves and in the last image is shown crying over the statue. The book was issued by the Equinox Cooperative Press, of which Ward was a member. The press was formed by a group of writers and artists to see into print works that traditional publishers wouldn't touch. 30 leaves with woodblock prints, printed on sheets folded and bound Japanese style. First edition (first printing). This is copy 86 of 920, signed by Ward. The book is…

Description:
New York: Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith, 1930. First Edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Lynd Ward's second wordless novel; this being one of 309 copies printed from the original wood blocks (essentially, this is a bound volume of 128 original wood engravings by Lynd Ward). Like Ward's other proto-graphic novels, he explores social-realist themes here, incorporating that with tropes from 19th century horror novels. The story begins with a white slave trader killing an African in order to steal his drum. The enslaver returns home to great prosperity, but gradually the curse of the drum takes hold and the characters become dissolute, die, are hanged, and are forced into prostitution. One even becomes a writer (the horror!). The story is anachronistic, seemingly set during the slave trading era, but with Communists and large telescope observatories. 132 leaves, including two blanks (260 printed pages, with all the wood engravings printed on only the front (recto) of the sheets. First edition (first…

Description:
New York: Jonathan Cape and Harrison Smith, 1929. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good. The American prototype for the graphic novel, a wordless novel consisting of a sequence of black-and-white illustrations reproduced from Lynd Ward's wood engravings. The Library of America edition of this book describes it as "a modern morality play, an allegory of the deadly bargain a striving young artist often makes with life." Despite being released the week after the great stock market crash of 1929, the book went through several printings and editions. This, the first printing, was issued without a dust jacket (a version with a dust jacket was issued later by the publisher Peter Smith). About 125 images, printed on the front side (recto) of each leaf, plus front matter; about 256 pages. First edition (first printing). A better than average copy with the typical wear to the edges and corners. There is a small stain to the upper corner of the page block, affecting about 6 leaves. Truly fine copies of this…
