This is a first edition of Generalissimo Churchill, a personal history of Winston Churchill as warlord. It covers only 1940-1942, when Churchill dominated his generals and the Americans. It is highly critical of Churchill, deeming him an 'evil genius'.There is lots of wear to the dust jacket (unclipped) and some fading to the book. Description:
Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803 – 1882) was an American essayist, lecturer, philosopher, and poet who led the transcendentalist movement of the mid-19th century. He was a champion of individualism and a prescient critic of the countervailing pressures of society, and he disseminated his thoughts through dozens of published essays and more than 1,500 public lectures across the United States.
This is a 'best of' collection, Essays, Poems and Addresses, published by Walter J Black for the Classics Club in 1969.
It is beige tweed boards with red and brilliant gold on the cover and spine; the top pages are dyed red.
There is a bookplate on the inside front cover, but it has already started to come off on its own and you can remove it (there are how-to videos online; it's really easy).
Unread and pristine. The dark mark you see in the cover image is my shadow.

Published by The Unicorn Publishing House c 1989.
The book contains 32 illustrations by Greg Hildebrandt (1939- ), plus a map.

Description:
This is an unread copy of Rise of Russia, part of the Great Ages of Man series which Time-Life Books began publishing in the 60s. This book was written in 1967 by former CIA officer Robert Wallace; Time-Life's editors updated it and it was republished in 1977.

This book was well received. It covers the period of Russia becoming Russia (800+ AD) to the end of Peter the Great (1725). Reviews say it's a very good survey of the people who became Russia, that it is free from bias and that is extremely interesting and useful.

184 pages, including loads of photos.
There is a bookplate on the inside front cover which is already coming off on its own.

Pristine condition.

Note: Also listed here, I have three other books from this series: Ancient China, Ancient Egypt and Imperial Rome.

Description:
In nine chapters, The Golden Scarecrow presents nine stories of nine children, united by location. A tenth story of a tenth life, divided into Prologue and Epilogue, provides a different sort of unity. They are both gentle and horrible tales.
This book is an exercise in entering into the minds/hearts of children
The premise is that children come into this world with a knowledge of the world they have left behind and a spiritual link to it through a companion just referred to as their Friend. Some adults are able to mature without losing their Friend and some children push him away when they are still small. It needs the heart of a child and a willingness to believe in things we can't see.
Sir Hugh Seymour Walpole (1884 - 1941) was one of the most popular authors of his time. He wrote 36 novels, and five volumes of short stories; his most famous novel is Rogue Herries.
The Golden Scarecrow was first published by Cassell in 1915, then the copyright was transferred to MacMillan.

Description:
Beginning in 1835, the Fleet Street (London) publisher Tilt and Bogue (Charles Tilt) began publishing Tilt's Miniature Classic Library. Altogether, 50 titles were published, all classics of English Literature.
All of the books are the same: 2 3/4" wide and 4 1/4" high. The covers are embossed with gold, the spines are embossed with gold, the pages are edged with gold and they contain color plates. Printed by Bradbury & Evans, Whitefriars.
This one is Marmion, A Tale of Flodden Field, the epic poem written by Sir Walter Scott and published in 1808.
This copy was published in 1841. It doesn't appear to have been read, as the pages have not all been separated. But inside are little flowers that were pressed by someone along the way.
It's not as frail as you would expect. There's a 1" tear to the fabric of the spine, at the corner. The covers need cleaning and the binding has pulled away a little. All of this can be easily fixed by a bookbinder or a high-end printer.
258 pages, very small print.

Stories
Quentin Durward, originally published in 1823, is an historical novel about a Scottish archer in the service of the French King Louis XI (1423-1483).
Guy Mannering, or the Astrologer, was published anonymously in 1815. It tells the story of Harry Bertram, who is kidnapped at age five by smugglers after witnessing the murder of a customs officer. It follows Harry's life and the struggle of the inheritance of his father's estate. The novel also depicts the lawlessness that existed at the time (1760-1780), when… Read More

Description:
This is an elegant copy of Ivanhoe: A Romance, a historical novel by Sir Walter Scott, first published in 1819. It is one of the best known and most influential of Scott's novels.
Ivanhoe is set in 12th-century England with colourful descriptions of a tournament, outlaws, a witch trial and divisions between Jews and Christians. It has been credited for increasing interest in romance and medievalism and turning people's minds away from the Middle Ages. It also significantly influenced popular perceptions of Richard the Lionheart, King John and Robin Hood.
This copy was published in 1979 by the Heritage Club. It is blue and red boards with a brilliant gold design on the spine. Inside, there are many illustrations--in color. 471 pages.
Although it has a bookplate on the inside front cover (which you can remove), it has not been read, or even opened.

Description:
The Fair Maid of Perth, or St. Valentine's Day was first published in 1828. It was inspired by the strange, but historically true, story of the Battle of the North Inch. It is set in Perth around 1400.
The Battle of the North Inch, or the Battle of the Clans, was a staged battle between the Chattan Confederation and the 'Clan Kay' in September 1396. Thirty men were selected to represent each side in front of spectators that included King Robert III of Scotland and his court, on what is now the North Inch Park in Perth.
The Chattan Confederation killed all but one opponent, at a cost of 19 of their own men. It is not clear whom they were fighting: it may have been their traditional enemies Clan Cameron or it may have been Clan Davidson, in an internal dispute for precedence in the Chattan line of battle in future campaigns against the Camerons.
Provenance
The inside front cover of this book bears the pre-printed book plate of Robert Treat Platt, author of Oregon and Its Share in the Civil War (1903).… Read More

Description:
When the Going Was Good is a selection of travel writing by the English authorEvelyn Waugh (1903-1966). Waugh did a lot of travel writing--enough to fill four books. But he wasn't happy with most of it and, in 1946, pulled the best bits from the four books and published this book. It was a best-seller and the Reprint Society published it in 1948. This is one of those copies.
Chapter one is a cruise from Monaco, through Italy, Egypt, Greece and Malta.
Chapter two is Addis Ababa.
Chapter three is Aden, Kenya and Uganda.
Chapter four is Brazil.
Chapter five is Somalia and Ethiopia.
314 pages, including the portrait of Waugh by Henry Lamb.
In photo #3, the book looks faded. It isn't--that's from the lighting. It's all dark emerald green and, except for the remnants of one thumb print, it's in perfect condition.
